More power but less gas mileage gee thanks but the
same price

The local citgo's all just went to this fuel

I got a tank of this in milwaukee 1 day the truck
ran great but the mileage droped a little

Vehicle tests were conducted to determine the influence of ethanol in a 10% ethanol/90% gasoline fuel mixture on fuel economy, regulated and unregulated exhaust emissions, exhaust hydrocarbon distribution, and road octane quality.^Volumetric fuel economy was shown to be slightly decreased while energy economy was slightly increased using the ethanol/gasoline blend compared to gasoline.^When compared to the base gasoline, the use of the ethanol/gasoline blend caused no deleterious effects upon regulated emissions at ambient temperatures from 20 to 75/sup 0/F; at 100/sup 0/F ambient there were minor increases in emissions using the ethanol/gasoline blend.^The ethanol/gasoline blend generally had either no effect on or reduced all unburned hydrocarbon components except at the 100/sup 0/F test condition compared to gasoline.^Road octane quality was shown to be increased by the use of the ethanol-gasoline blend compared to gasoline

More power???????

>From Mark's Handbook for Mechanical Engineers:

* Ethanol yields about 12,770 Btu's/lb of thermal energy from combustion based on its HHV. On a volumetric basis that becomes 83,910 Btu's/gal.

* Gasoline yields about 20,260 Btu's/lb of thermal energy from combustion based on its HHV. On a volume basis that becomes 124,800 Btu's/gal.

You be the judge when it comes to claims of "more power."

Ethanol is manditory in MN. I belive all gas stations are required to have 10% mix and the state may even bump it up to 20%.

i agree with larry. In my experience i feel the truck runs better with ethanol, but i get worse mileage too. 16/19 89octane(10%ethanol) 17/22 with 87octane. Why can't gas be $1.00?

The statement of "more power" from a Btu standpoint is not correct. However, the ethanol has a cooling and cleaning effect which over time reduces carbon formation and should make for a slightly "denser" air/fuel mixture (the cooling effect). Also, it does raise the octane which will help prevent detonation which allows you to run the vehicle "harder" without pinging. On newer vehicles with knock sensors that retard timing this higher octane will allow the engine to stay out of spark knock and thus keep the timing further advanced and making more power.

Sorry, Bud, but it's probably for the same reason I can't buy a new for less $2000 anymore. I can't buy another house for less than $25000 either. Even at today's prices, it is a bargain compared to 20-40 years ago. We've just gotten spoiled by spending a much smaller portion of our income on gas.

I remember it hurting when I had to part with a $10 bill just to fill my tank, but then again, I was making 1/10 the income I am today.

You are comparing the BTUs of pure methanol and pure gasoline. Larry is referring to a blend, which, as stated above, can yield more power due to less detonation, and therefore, more timely and complete combustion in the power stroke.

It's not an exact relationship unless you are being 100% efficient, but it should be relative. To get the 3-5% increase in power, with E85, I believe that you have to burn 40% more fuel. Any power increas from E15 is more than offset by increased consumption. Increase the amount of gasoline that you burn and you will get more power too. If you are getting increased power for an increase in octane, then use a higher octane gasoline instead of comparing apples and oranges.

As far as price goes, if gasoline was as heavily subsidized as ethanol, we would be paying a lot less.

The St. Louis area has had ethanol for at least the last 8-9 years. I can't tell any difference for the gas milage with it or w/o it (its only 10% supposedly).
