Subject: Pre-magnum TPS sensor?
IP: Logged

Message:
Hello, its me again. While I wait for another transmission, I wanted to know if anyone would know anything about the correct voltage on the TPS sensor for a pre-magnum 3.9 (mine is an '89). I hear that the TPS sensor should read from .7v to .75v while the key is in the "on" position, but these people have the newer magnum engines.

I have already modified the sensor before I got the voltage readings from it. Stupid me! I removed the steel bushings on the sensor by heating them with a small butane torch and pushing them out. I took several readings with the sensor rotated at two positions. The two positions are: rotating the sensor counter-clockwise (torwards the "back"), and rotating the sensor clockwise (torwards the "front"). The voltages at closed throttle (CT) and wide-open throttle (OT) are shown below.

-----| Back | Front
-----|----------|-----------
CT | 0.72v | 1.06v
-----|----------|-----------
OT | 3.38v | 3.77v

I estimated that before I modified the sensor, the sensor read around .9v at closed throttle and 3.6v at WOT. Does this sound right at all? I dont know what the voltages supposed to read. The engine ran good, so the readings shouldn't be too wrong. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

They are in the ' ballpark '..
Probably best for you to try to
center it again .
You can try to set it towards the higher readings
to improve throttle response if needed !
( that first touch off idle ) after that it doesn't realy make any difference..

Thanks. I was just curious to see what things supposed to be like. I guess that pre-mags should have the same voltages as your magnum's TPS. I will experiment with different positions to see how it runs after we get the newer transmission in tonight. This wasn't important, I just wanted to hear from somebody to hear what they think. If anyone has anything to add, please do so...

Factory service manual says minimum of 0.2 volts at closed throttle. 0.7 volts is more typical of modified ones, not stock position.
