Hi there,
I just replaced the 3.9 in my 96 dak with a 3.9 from a 97 dak, it seemed to drop right in other than some wiring issues.
The problem is that the engine wont snug up closer than ~ 1/2" to the auto tranny and wont allow the flexplate to mount to the converter (both are from the 96, there is nothing between the bell housing and engine that would stop them from mating.
Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated ;)
jim

Sounds like the torque converter is not fully engaged. Typically, you slide it in til it kinda pops in place, then you spin it around a bit, while pushing in, and it'll pop in a little further as the converter fully engages the pump.

Thanks for the quik reply!
I'll give it a whirl tomorrow when the light comes back ;)

On another note, I have a 94 dak 4x4 with a 5.2, the oil pressure has been going from fairly low when cold to flat 0 when warmed up.
This started shortly after flushing the motor, I've now dropped the pan and replaced the pump and screen which were actually not too dirty and finally replaced the oil sending unit with neither affecting it, what would be the next logical thing to check out? thanks again
jim

put a mechanical gage on it. if memory serves me right, Mopar says min oil pressure is 6 to 8 psi @ idle. 35-85psi @ 3k rpm.

could be worn oil pump, leaky pressure releif valve or worn main or cam bearings.

how many miles?

Hey Daddio,
I've replaced the pump and it starts to get noisy when the pressure bottoms out, I'll try to get a guageand test it.
It's got ~140k, is the presure relief valve built onto the pump?

Gen1dak, do you mean fully engaged to the tranny (pushing backwards) I've given it another 1 1/2hrs :/ and still doesn't wanna go, ugh.

sounds to me like its time for some new bearings in the bottom end of your motor. the reason you get good pressure when its cold is that your bearings havent expanded and stay close to the crank, but when the motor warms up, from the wear and expansion your bearings are too loose making it hard to maintain oil pressure. id drop the pan and pull a main cap to check the bearings.

tranny update: the engine apparently was connected to a manual tranny as there is a pilot bearing in the end of the crankshaft :/ Any ideas on removing this without a puller?

Oil pressure: well, it should be a little easier dropping the pan this time :) Jacking the vehicle and dropping the axle seemed to be the best route

sorry for the double post, also, is there a general way to test the crankshaft bearings prior to dropping the pan?

The pilot bearing is not an issue regarding use with the automatic. You need to have no tension on the converter when spinning it. When spinning the converter, make sure the tranny shaft is not turning. Just slide the driveshaft back onto the tranny output to hold it still. That way the tranny input shaft will hold still when turning the converter. Wiggle the converter back just a little to be sure there's no tension, then try again with output shaft held in place. Spin it and gingerly push the converter back til it seats. If you look at it right now, does the converter stick out beyond the tranny bellhousing? When fully seated, the flexplate will be roughly within the confines of the bellhousing.

The pressure relief valve/spring is built into the pump.

The reason you get good pressure when cold is the oil is cold, and thicker. Try a heavier weight oil, or some STP (motor honey) to fatten it up before dropping the pan. I have to agree though, that the bearing clearances may be opening up, especially after an engine flush. No telling what that flush did to the bearings.

Well, I verified the converter was in and decided to yank the motor back out and take a better look. It appears there's a pilot bearing inside of an adapter(?), I was able to remove the pb, but the adapter won't budge. Is this piece actually removable? thank in advance, jim

you'll have to pull the crank to check the bearings. pressure relief valve is built into the pump. you can use plasti-gage to check bearing clearances. they are probably worn as 93 said.

Thanks daddio, I guess it's probably a good idea to plan on changing them since i'll be in so deep unfortunately it'll have to wait 'til I'm done with the lift which is connected to my other dak (read:pilot bearing adapter) :^/

Success!
The pilot bearing adapter has been neutralized!

Since the ring is made of aluminum, I decided to try drilling a 3/8" hole on either side of the pilot bearing hole (taking care to not go too deep) then wiggling an ordinary screwdriver in one of the holes, the adapter fell right out! The engine is back in, connected to the tranny and a couple of hrs. from turning the key :D

thank again, jim

p.s. on to the main bearings of the '94 :/
