When is a good time to replace the timing chain? Are there any indications when this should be replaced? If so, what are they? Is there a rattle??

Every 100k miles. Might as well replace the water pump if you are replacing the timing chain. The 3.9 does rattle, not sure about the new 3.7 or various V8s.

I have 133,000 on a 1994, 3.9 V6. I had my garage check to see if they could hear any timing chain slap. According to them, they say not. I do hear valve tap but he's saying that's all it's. Does timing chain slap sound similiar?

A timing chain that is stretching on a 3.9 is more of a rattle than a slap - almost like a cat going bad. Do a search on here, someone posted a detailed way to check to see if the timing chain needs replacing, I think it had to do with the rotor/cap. I know someone showed me to check it by connecting a wrench onto the fan rod (behind where the fan blade sits) and rocking it back and forth. If it gives before spinning then it's time to replace the chain.

if you have 133k on a 3.9 your chain IS stretched. there is no if ands or buts about it, they didnt have a fluke in manufacturing that one out of every 4 worked or anything, they all sucked and you should change yours before it gets expensive.
