Subject: Performance Headers

Message:
I'm looking to get performance headers for my '99 Dakota 3.9 V-6. The exhaust is stock, except for a single in dual out Flowmaster 40 series muffler. Are there any type of performance header that would be a direct bolt in that would bolt right to the factory exhaust? I'm looking for HP gains, and sound... while keeping the price down. Any help would be appreciated.

Dan

All make direct bolt in manifold replacement
shorty headers

For best resaults cold air intake
bigger throttle body
V8 body
fastman 46mm
F&B 48mm

1.7 roller rockers

just doing the exhaust without first improving the
intake side will show no gains and most will lose
low end power

Do the intake first than add the headers or you
are waisting your time all you will get is better
sound

Most headers cost about 400 and up for the Dakota, some in the 600s. A cheap way to boost power a little might be to find some exaust manifolds off of a 95 or older 3.9, suposedly they flow a little better, and then working on the rest of your exaust withsomeething like a catback system or a flowmaster muffler or soemthing along those lines. An air intake would probably also help some, but Larry is right, headers alone wont help much if any.

Headers in conjunction with other performance parts can make a noticable ditterence, but at the price they are for dakota I would go another route if you are trying for a value aproach.

PS 95 and older magnum manifolds, dont use premag manifolds.

The exhaust manifolds you are talking about were
the 92 93 modle year just bolting them on will
give you 5hp over the 94 and up smaller ones

1992 and 93 were rated at 180 hp 95 and up 175
the only diff was the exhaust manifolds were
bigger and flowed better

once you improve the intake side headers high flow
cat low restriction muff will show from 10 to 15hp

As someone who has done all this work, it's a lot of money for very little performance. I've done the cold air kit, the 1.7s, the 48mm TB, the JBAs, the hi flow cat, the better muffler... etc. etc... Now it's a slightly peppier V6.

As I read it, before one goes with headers they need to get a cool air intake system done. I have a 95 and have the K&N system. After reading every post I could I figure I'm sucking in hot air, better than stock but not great. I did knock out the plastic piece and took the stock hose and ran it towards the K&N filter. Before I spend money on a 97 air hat and another K&N cool air intake system will the benefit be worth the cost. Or should I use what I have and go to the next mod headers and a TB?

92-93 have egr manifolds so you would have to close the egr port on the manifold with a small plate, otherwise they should work on every 3.9 from 92-current..yes that excludes you 3.7 guys

Yes the 92 93 exh manifolds will bolt right on
either make a small plate or get the egr tube
with them and weld the tube shut or cut it off
and tap and put a pipe plug in it

I have seen it done all 3 ways

On my 95 I just used an eclisp hood scoop with a
hole cut in the hood on a scanner watching the
IAT temp it works very well on an 80 degree day
around 40mph about 120 50 to 60mph it will drop
to 90 degrees even driving slow as soon as you
open the throttle just a little you can see it
drop instantly from the raming air

Look at some of the other intake setups like AIM
Magnum a lot of them come with the air hat all
come with a cotton gause cone filter that is
washable and reusable wash oil and reuse

I like the hood scoop, Larry. Did you just center it over your engine and cut a hole in the hood. Does the tape hold the scoop on as advertised? I don't think I ever saw a post where you mention relocating the IAT. Do you not recommend this. Thanks.

So I could bolt a 5.2 throttle body to my 3.9? What modifications would need to be done? Also what kind of effects will it have on my horsepower and fuel economy?
