89 is a lockup also but use the torque converter
out of the 89

Are there 3 wires on the 89 trans

center 12 volt
front o/d
rear lockup

or just 2 o/d only elec control

Let me know what you have for wires and I can tell
you how to make it work right in the 95

I know for sure the bellhousings will bolt up. One thing to consider is if you are buying the tranny make sure there is a bellhousing, because the 95s had the bellhousing cast into the transmission case and the 89s did not, so if you were planning on using the 95 bellhousing thats not going to happen. The hydralic cluch could be different on the newer tranny, but that would probably just involve using the slave and master cylinders from the 89. I would measure where the tranny mounts are, how far behind the bellhousing the shifter is, and the overall length of the tranny before i bought it just to be sure, unless someone knows it will fit for sure. Since the Gen 1's and Gen 2's are very similar there is a good chance it will all bolt up. If the overal length of the 89 tranny is different and you have a 4wd it would be way to much work since it would involve relocating the transfer case. If its 2wd then the driveshaft could just be modified

Personaly I would try to find a tranny from a newer dakota since the 89 is probably a New Process 535, which is not very strong. The newer tranny in Dakotas, I believe it is the New Venture 2500 is much stronger, they used it in V8 Rams and Chevy had a version in thier full size pickups. If you dont drive hard or tow and the measurements are the same, go for it.

If the 89 tranny is the same as the 91 (what I have) it is the NV 2500 (or NV 535), the newer 5 speed is a NV 3500 or AX 15? See following link for a little info
