Not a hard change at all. Get yourself a few cans of r-134a and a kit that contains: converters, a fill hose with a guage, and maybe one can of r-134a sealer. Make sure all of the old r-12 is out. My dak was wrecked, so after I rebuild it, I was sure that there was no r-12. Attach the converter onto your fill location ( mine was on the compressor, bad spot, right next to the moving belt) The rest should be in the directions with the kit. One note, if you take your truck to get serviced, make sure that you attached the enclosed sticker in the kit, so the garage mechanic knows that your truck has been convereted. My A/C was great last summer. I didn't get the system power purged by a shop, which would make my air a little colder, but it's cold enough to where I don't sweat fully dressed, in 90 degree summer sun, in bumper to bumper traffic. Good Luck!!

Pretty much as Entiland said. If you buy one of those conversion kits, you'll get everything you need. It also comes with a CD that includes videos.
You can get them at wal-mart and auto parts stores.

if you have a problem no ac certified mechanic will touch it if it has a sticker from a do it yourself kit as there is no way to vacuum out ALL the old r-12 by a diy'er before adding the 134, so the stuff is cross cantaminated and he will not ruin his load of 134 in his tank with your 12/134 mix.

Good point, everyone should know to evap the system first. The kit states that as well. Look around, alot of places will do this for no charge.

Yes, if it's not evacuated first, it will fail within weeks or months, costing many hundreds to fix. Done well, it can be ice-cold 7 or more years later.

You *must* change the drier, and should also change the expansion valve when converting. So not everything you need is in the kit.

I bought the kit at Wal-Mart about two years ago. I don't think there was a drop of R-12 in my '91, the compressor would not kick on. Had my neighbor evacuate the system and helped me put the new in. I did not change anyting out(dryer or expansion valve)and now two years later its still working just fine, cool as can be, maybe I'm just lucky?

I did this conversion after my truck was wrecked and we had to remove the condensor. The system sat open for about a week, but them was closed back up with new seals, and a new drier. I added the retrofit adapters and filled the system and it worked great all summer. When you take the caps off the retro-fit adapters theres a hiss like 134 is escaping.. is this because the adapters are not 100% tight or are they faulty>?

That was the transition year. You can tell if it's R-12, because the low and high side valves will be Schrader valves, like your tires. R134a valves are quick-connect releases.

Yup, but decals can fall off. Checking the type of valve is the surest way.
