Subject: Timing ?

I thought I already posted this, but it looks like it didn't post. I have a 97 CC, automatic, and I'm running the champion truck plugs. I know that the timing can't be adjusted by conventional methods, but is it possible to still check the timing? I marked the timing mark on the harmonic balancer with some white paint and hooked up a timing light, and I couldn't even see the mark. I hooked it up previously to an adjsutable timing light and according to that it was 5 or 6 degrees off, but I'm not sure if it was retarded or advanced. I am hearing a rattling and/or a pinging at idle and when accelerating, so I'm trying to figure out if I need to replace the timing chain or the belly pan. I looked down the throttle body and noticed some dried deposits but no wet oil. When I accelerate hard, some black smoke comes out of the tailpipe. If the chain jumped a tooth, would that explain my problems. The truck is running pretty smooth just sluggish, and a low idle at times. Let me know your thoughts, thanks.

Timing can be checked with a conventional timing light - should be 10 degrees BTDC for most engines.

your truck sounds like mine was before i changed my timing chain, it was really sluggish and the soot was definetely present(you could see it at idle comin out). but i reccomend changing the chain, i hooked a timing light to mine before changing the chain...the timing bounced erratically from -10 to + 10 deg. so i would change it

93dak4x4-Thanks, I am noticing some buildup of soo
on the tailpipe.

Bob Lincoln-I have actually checked it with a timing
light, but I was under the impression that if I clipped it to
the #1 cylinder spark plug wire and shine the light on
the harmonic balancer, the timing mark on the
harmonic balancer should be matching up with the
TDC mark. Let me know if you think this is incorrect.
Thanks.
