I have a troble code of P1391
Camshaft Or Crankshaft Position Sensor Intermittent Loss
How do you troubleshoot this, the truck runs great, although it takes a while to get it started.

Crank sensor is at back of engine , passenger side
just below distributor. On your truck , you probably need to remove inner fender , passenger
side to see, get at it . First inspect the
connector to the computer - possible "dirty"
connection !

the CPS usually works or does not work. when it is an intermitent problem it is due to a short or bad conection in the wiring

just replace the sensor and do the crank sensor mod at the same time, that should probably cure the problem and give you a few ponies and a mpg or two

I noticed the previous post mentioned "Replace the Sensor and do the Crank mod at the same time"

What is the Crank mod ? Replacing the sensor I understand. What are the details of the crank mod ?

Thanks for taking the time to respond to my Q.

Remove the crank sensor
Slot the holes,
Slide the crank sensor as far as it will go towards the oil filter.

Results,
Advance in timing

If the motor pings after the mod
Go to 1 range colder on the spark plugs
NGK FR5's recommended

cps mod
note position
slot holes with a round file 3/8" remove rubber
gromit from hole and move towards oil filter or
down

use 2 little washers and do not over tighten and
be sure all fileings are off pickup

Play in drive shaft is usualy u-joints unless your
spline is wore but that is very unusual

The cam sensor is under the dist cap once the
cap and rotor is removed it lifts right out all
this does is tell the injectors when to fire
and look there is a square side and a round side
be sure you put it in the right way. plug it in
and your done

when it starts hard stop pull a spark plug
if wet crank sensor
if dry cam sensor

I have a 2006 dodge dakota slt, the check engine light came on and the engine started to idle bad. I changed plus and wires. I cleaned the IAC valve. I used sea foam in the gas. I used Mopar cleaner thru the throttle body. It is still missing and will not idle. Any suggestions.

Here this might be of some help..

P1391 - Intermittent loss of camshaft position
sensor or crankshaft position sensor
Rich pointed out that possibilities include a dead
or badly installed camshaft position sensor; valve
timing out of spec; sensor relearning required
with a scan tool; or a damaged tone wheel or pulse
ring. ImperialCrown wrote that the cam position is
used mainly to synchronize fuel injectors, the
crank position is needed to know when to spark. A
good scan tool can usually pick up the problem by
monitoring the sensors; a bad one will sometimes
get “lost.” Timing chain and water pump sensors
can cause the code to be set (if timing marks are
out of range).

Check the spark path: plugs, wires, dist cap. Etc.
