I have a 1998 dakota 4x4 which I'm starting to believe is severly jinxed. This time around it started out as running a little rough and went to stumbling & backfireing. It doesn't seem to matter if it's cold, warm, wet or dry when it does it. I did orginally run a bottle of gumout total engine cleaner through it and it smoothed out great for that one tank. The check engine light orginally showed of code of misfire on cylinder #2 so I changed sparkplugs and wires. That didn't help and it now hase 5 more engine misfire codes, autozones checker didn't specify which cylinder. The thing is becoming a money pit. The tranny has slipped off and on since I bought it, the dealer said he couldn't find anything wrong but would be willing to put in a new one for me, that was real sweet of him. I've had to replace the engine with one out of a 2001 after mine seized up going down the interstate. It's blown 2 heater cores and if anyone has had to replace those gold plated bad boys they know how expensive that is. I've replaced the sensor on the rearend that effects the tach and speed gauge. The list goes on. I'd appreciate any ideas, I'm out of them after replacing the sparkplugs and wires, the rotor and distributor cap was replaced about 2 years ago along with the wires and plugs.

Try checking your distributor gear and bushing. They tend to go bad a lot, and causes the exact same probs your describing. I spent over $800 on mine before I found out that it was a $60 gear and bushing. I replaced all sensors, computer and everything. I can about say thats what your problem is. Good luck.

How about something simple, like checking the coil. They can break down and stil run,but misfire and even back fire. Check the coil out,I had this happen to the other day.
Goodluck

Engine misfires are usually related to fuel or spark. I would first check your fuel pressure. 55-60psi@idle. Then see if you have spark. after that look at your upstream 02.
