Subject: Help! Truck Stinks And is running lean
IP: Logged

Message:
I just installed autometers A/F ratio gauge on my 98 3.9L auto and it shows that it runs really lean. it does not show up stoich until I step on it and stay at 50mph+ alot of times it has a real bad rotten egg smell. i had the cat replaced not too long ago cause it feel apart and sounded like a toro snow blower. is there a way to change the a/f ratio? i ordred the iat adjuster and have not got it yet and i am going to order a new upstream o2 sensor today. is this the prob and will it fix it. my truck has 57,000miles and i was told to replace the o2sensors at 60,000miles. any suggestions or info will help. Chris

If you connected the A/F meter to the PCM harness (output from the factory O2 sensor), it's actually running rich (rotten egg smell). The O2's respond backwards on the PCM lead:

Not enough oxygen (rich) = Lean signal
Too much oxygen (lean) = Rich signal

Grab a single-wire O2 sensor (old style GM) and have an O2 bung welded into the end of the Y-Pipe before the catalytic converter. Use the seperate O2 as it will read what's going through your exhaust. (Much more accurate than tapping off of the factory O2 signal lead.)
