Subject: Injector sync? (Larry)
IP: Logged

Message:
Larry,
One other time you had mentioned in a post i wrote that my mileage issues might be a product of injector sync. I was wondering if you would give me a relatively detailed explanation of how to adjust/check it. I have not dealt with an mpi system especially something this complicated, so i want to make sure i am doing it correct.

Thats about the only thing i can think of that would cause my mileage to be 16hwy. Unless anybody else has another idea?

FROM THE FRONT OF TRUCK TURN THE MOTOR CLOCK WISE
TIL THE HARMONIC BALANCER TIMING MARK LINES UP WITH THE TIMING TAP [TDC] 0 DEGREES[make sure #1 piston is on comp stroke]

IF YOU GO BY DON,T TURN BACKWARDS

START OVER-GO AROUND TO YOU COME BACK TO COMP STROKE ON #1 PISTON

WITH THIS DONE REMOVE DIST CAP,UNDER THE CAP IN THE DIST IS A PLASTIC COVER WITH LINES ON IT IN ONE SPOT,LOOSEN THE DIST,TURN THE DIST SO THE METAL TIP OF THE ROTOR BUTTON LINES UP BETWEEN THESE LINES,LOOKING STRAIGHT DOWN ON THEM

RETIGHTEN DIST,REPLACE CAP,JOB DONE

THIS CAN/WILL HELP MILEAGE AND POWER

'93, the timing is set @ 0 TDC when adjusting the sync. from what i've read the truck can take up +6 on the inj sync though. that's if you have access to a scan tool.

when you say +6 you mean degrees of timing on the crank or what...cuz i only have a #1 cyl line and thats it. though i did set it to that line, so we will see what i get

you'd actually have to have a scan tool to see the +6. if you can dig up one of larry's old post he mentioned exactly where and how to line up the rotor with that cyl mark to get, what Larry says is about a +3. if you line the rotor up exactly on that cyl mark the sync will be 0.

here is a post on the subject and Larry gives a breif desc on how to do it. about halfway down the post. http://www.dodgedakota.net/boards/v6/7448.html

motor at TDC rotor pointing at or near #1 wire
will be comp stroke will point towards pass side
of truck

damper at 0 always turn clockwise never turn back
or you will get any slop in the chain and dist
gear and be way off

looking from front of truck straight down over
rotor, pickup plat has 1 line marked cyl

with the rotor button centered over line 0
back edge of rotor lined with line towards the
clockwise position +3

most are set from factory at 0 to -6 not good
+3 to +6

1 degree on dist = 2 crank the intake opens 8
degrees before TDC and fireing the injector just
after this opens will catch it when both valves
are open and the scavaging effect will help draw
the fuel in faster while the exhaust and intake
are both open at the same time the exhaust pulse
actualy helps pull in the fuel (overlap) 32
degrees they are both open at the same time

Fireing the injector at 0 TDC you will miss this
and just be drawing with the piston down stroke
improved low end gas mileage and perf will be
noticeable from going to the plus side

ok, thanks larry, except i have a little different situation, it would be impossible for me to get it at +3, i have it set at 0 right now and the distributor cant turn any more in that direction. my tdc on #1 was pointing toward the wheel well of the truck not straight over. so i am not sure what is going on with that. but it was set probably close to -6 if i am thinking of distance right. so this should help, i am going on a long trip sunday so we will see how she does.

man i really wish i knew how to do this...im just not that much on engine work.....can someone maybe e-mail me at cstmdak@aol.com and help me a little, or be willing to give me a call and kinda talk me through it....or is there a book i can get that walks you through it step by step with illistrations?

i tried fixing a timing problem on my old jeep, 10 days and $400 later i had it taken to a automotive electrical shop...

My god, how can you do this with the engine still in the truck??? I never got around to looking for the distributor until now and I'm stunned! Why do they have to stick it in that little crevice behind the engine buried under hoses??? (don't answer, I know exactly why).
And the bolt on the crank pulley too, do you have to remove the fan and fan shroud to get to that?
I was considering doing this mod but now I'm not so sure unless anyone has a simple solution that I didn't figure out. I mean, the place they located the distributor is simply ridiculous, I wish they still built cars honestly so average guys could do simple jobs, but today no job is simple just because they have to freakin' bury every component.

i am kinda suprised that you guys think its hard. it was a bit of a pain getting the motor at tdc but all in all it took me like 20 minutes, was free, and netted me better response, 3 mpg, and more power. the mod is pretty simple.

Wade,
There isnt really much to tell you that hasnt been said. i guess what we need to know is what you dont understand? The easiest way to understand this mod is to try to do it. print out what we've said, and take it out with you. the pieces should fall together.

My problem isn't with understanding the procedure, I just don't know how to work on the distibuter in such a tight space or even see what I'm doing. I know they sneak little things like that in the design so more people bring it to the dealer who would otherwise work on it themselves. Every old car I've seen, the distributer is always very accessible. I'm not here to complain though, I'm just backing up my point.

its a little tight to get back to the distributor, but its not impossible thats for sure. its tighter to get to the 1/2" nut that loosens the distributor, i just used a small wrench and had it on the box end

only tools i needed was the 1 1/4" to set tdc, phillips screwdriver, 1/2" wrench and a flashlight, and about 30 mins of my afternoon

truck runs so much better now. its the only mod ive done that actually helps in just daily driving mode, just crusing between 20mph and 50, no need to keep it out of od. i think the best spot i noticed is my 2-3 shift, my truck used to fall on its face if i wasnt really squeezing the pedal. now it just kinda motors right along. best throttle response mod yet.

i'd imagine having the cam degree'd just right would make this even better, as well as fms injectors. those will be summer mods, along with the double roller chain & fastman/martin saine tranny valve body

gotta try the cps sensor soon, that should help a little as well.

thanks so much larry and 93dak for the explainations, awesome mod. this might as well be posted on the main page (except i dont want the v8 guys to find out lol)

Ok the crank pulley is the one on the very bottom, below the fan right? (I have a '00 3.9) Now how do I go about getting a socket on that nut, it doesn't seem like theres any way to get to it. The only place I can see the nut is from below through the hole in that plastic shroud but theres no way I could get a wrench on it that way. Should I take out the fan shroud and try from above? I'm tying to take it off now and I'm stuck at that plastic fastener on the bottom left corner.

might as well. it was a little easier for me to get it to tdc cuz i've already removed my clutch fan and shroud, just running electric fan. but yes, the crank is the bottom pulley, the fan is on the water pump.

it's real easy to go from under the truck with a deep socket and ratchet for that crank bolt. And for my dist holddown bolt, i have a dist wrench, it's bent in a L shape, about 4" x 6" and has a 3/8" square drive end. works great.
