Subject: 3.9 to 5.2 engine swap help
IP: Logged

Message:
I have a 1997 dodge dakota 4x4 with the 3.9 v6 manual transmission in it and i want to swap it out for the 5.2 v8. If i do this do i have to swap the engine harness's or can i just put in a new computer. Will the stock tranny work with the 5.2 or will i have to swap the tranny's to. Will a manual transmission for the 5.2 fit in place of the stock. What other parts will i need to do this. any tips or trick would be appreciated.

cheaper to sell the one you got and buy the one you want then ta go through all that.the stock tranny for the 3.9 is not as stong as the one for the 5.2 so you will need to change it or end up breaking the one you got. itt'll fit but wont last more then a run or two down the track at full throttle.

I don't know very much about swapping engines but why would it be difficult to swap a 3.9 to a 5.2? It's the same engine basically. Just a few things should need swapping right? Like the tranny and whatnot. And there is no way it's cheaper to buy a new truck than to swap the engine into an old one. If you did it yourself, the engine should cost you 1500 max and then the labor would be on you. Add the cost of parts... Maybe it could be cheaper but I just don't see how. Please enlighten me.

you can do the swap relatively cheap. i had lines on a complete 5.2 for 200. but thats neither here nor there. for the swap you can either change the whole harness or add two wires for the two extra injectors, the rest is the same, you need the v8 computer and your v6 flex plate for the manual. he is somewhat correct about the trans, its not as heavy duty as the stock tranny for the 5.2 but the trans for that motor isnt that great either, if you want to change transmissions i would look into something a little nicer then a dodge trans....chrysler hasnt made a bullet proof trans in a while.
