Hey all, I'm at wits end here trying to figure out why I my 2003 3.9L V6 Dakota isn't selling! A friend of mine owns a garage/dealership and has it out on his front lot for me and I've had it posted all over the web and put ads in newspapers/magazines/auto&truck trader publications. It's been for sale since July of last year still under warrantee as it only has 15K miles on it, had the ball joints replaced, it's mint! I love the truck but I unfortunately have to part with is as I am living overseas now. Originally I'm from Southeastern Massachusetts and that's where the truck is located, am I a victim of location? Anyone else have issues trying to sell their Dakota? What more can I do to push the sale? The asking price is down to $16K right now, which is painful as that is faaaar below blue book. Any suggestions would be appreciated, thanks!

I'm going to guess at several factors.

2wd in an area with harsh winters? I'm assuming it's 2wd since you didn't mention it was a 4x4.

Is it a regular cab? I see mostly extended cab / quad cads around here.

It's a v6. Seems people want that v8 power , not the v6 gas milage.

I think the price is your problem. Mine is a 2003 extended cab with a 5 speed and I only paid $15,700 for it brand new. My neighbor has an extended cab with an automatic that he bought brand new a month after I did and only paid $16,500 for it. Both of these trucks are 2wd.

You may have to suck it up and lower your price. Look through the local listings and find out what similar trucks are going for. Book value on a lot of vehicles can be deceptive. Good luck with the sale.

One other thing. You may not want to advertise that the ball joints have been changed unless someone asks. It may turn off a potential buyer.

Unfortunatly with the dakotas and durangos making the news, you may have problems selling anyway.

Thanks for the advice! It is a 4x4 quad cab, short bed with linex bedliner, CD/cruise control, auto trans. etc etc. Bluebook had it at 19K. What I also forgot to mention is that it's been advertised for sale since LAST JULY...grrrr...guess I'll have to cross my fingers and hope it works out.

Thanks again for all of your help!

I did a search for dealers within 100 miles of my house for similar trucks to yours. You are priced lower than what is asking for that truck (I live in Pawtucket RI).

I also found a couple of similar trucks to mine listed for more than I paid for it new.

Good luck with the sell.

I did actually have it advertised in RI Truck Trader although I'm not sure if it's still there or not. I do know it's still in one of the AutoTrader publications. It's that dark midnight blue color, shortbed. Blah...if you know anyone looking, please spread the word! ;)

1)dealer asking price is always higher as it is assumed that the obvious problems are fixed and some private owners tend to neglect maintenence. look in your local paper or auto trader to see what PRIVATE owners are asking and I'll bet it is less then you are.
2) high gas prices make it neccessary to ask less as the high milage models (cars) really are worth more as they use less gas.
my truck gets maybe on a good day 18 mpg hiway my car gets 31 hiway guess wich one I drive the most?

Thanks. I'm not selling it privately, it's actually through a dealer in Brockton, MA. This ensures the buyer that any and all maintenance on the truck is done pre-purchase.

Problem could be power, as well as price. That's an awful lot of truck to try to push with a v-6 in southeast MA traffic. Price also sounds high - which Blue book value are you using (there are several). Do you know value has gone down since you listed it ? It's another model year older now.

If I were looking for a truck I would certainly give it a look. "bluebook" doesn't mean jack. The price also gets diluted when they offer huge rebates and incentives on new ones. It seems you can never get near bluebook when you sell - and you can never get it that low when you buy! You need to decide - time vs. price - the demand for a product (especially one that new with no reason for a defect) is influenced heavily by price. have you checked the going prices for a similar truck on ebay?
