You almost have to take the whole dash off, once that is done you will see where the heater core is. If you have ac make sure you mark the hoses. Do it when you have a whole day, its not that hard but does take time.

dunno if this will help you any, but on a 93 ford ranger, I know for a fact that the only thing holding the heater-core in is the hoses on the firewall. With that project, I just popped the bottom cover off the heater-core on the interior and pulled the hoses apart from it on the firewall. Another thing is, if the hoses are too tight and don't wanna come off, I crimped the tubing inside the hoses with some pliers (since the old core was bad anyway) and they slipped right off. I pulled the ranger apart too and realized I only had to take off the hoses. Hope that helped ya. (yes I realize a dakota might be alot different.)

if it is like my 97 dakota, you have to remove the entire dashboard AND disconnect the a/c lines from the evaporator before you can remove the airbox. Once the heater hoses and a/c lines are disconnected, then you can pull the airbox apart and replace the heater core. Plan on having a second vehicle available for accidents: I went back to 3 different partshouses to swap my 'new' core for another because only 1 of the 4 I took home had the mounting tabs welded/soldered onto the heater tubes at the correct angle [the other 3 wouldn't fit]. It is a PAIN in the but, and took me 2 days due to the running around, but that was only about 4 hours the first day and 6 the next. Good Luck!

P.S., if you are already cracking the system open, you may want to check and replace the A/C evaporator core if needed, since you probably don't want to go through this again any time soon.
