I have a 02 Dakota 3.9l. It is due for the rear axle fluid change. Looking for tips on how to execute this and what is the best fluid to use. This will be my first time performing this service. Thank you.

There's no drain bolt, your best bet is to just remove the lower 5 or 6 bolts on your diff cover and loosen the remaining ones so you can pry the cover open without having oil get everywhere when you finally break the seal. Check for chunks of metal on the magnet at the bottom of the housing. Use black silicone to create a gasket between the cover and the housing, and torque the bolts to 30 ft-lbs. Synthetic 75w-90 is good oil for it, you'll need just under 2 quarts of oil, less if you have limited slip because you'll need to add the friction modifier. Fill it until it just starts to come out of the fill hole.

I just went out and got 3 Quarts of Valvoline 80w 90 Synthetic. I asked the guy at autozone and their specs were for 2 1/5 quarts unless you have to add the frition crap. Is 80w 90 Synthetic good...??? I hope so cause it was 4.39 a quart before tax :(

if you aren't concerned about inspecting for problems with the
gears/metal shavings etc. you could always just hand pump the
oil out through the plug

if you want to make sure you get all of the particles out (like i did) I just popped the cover off of the pumpkin and let it completely drain. Then i wiped out the crevaces with a cloth to get every particle possible, there were tons of them! Then I put on the new gasket and filled 'er back up.
