Just wondering if anyone here can offer any info. My 1991,3.9 ,TBI ,85k miles,2wd, has a problem when I come to a stop.It stammers and will die.Hot or cold doesn't matter.Sometimes it doesn't even do it but it usually does.Otherwise it runs great.I heard it could be the idle speed control actuator but I don't know for sure where it is or what it looks like, much less how to service it.when I first start it it comes to idle perfectly but when I stop at the first stop sign i.e. take my foot off the gas to apply the brake while in gear its like it wants to idle way down, stammer out and die. What do you think?
thanks---------Russ

One possibility is the lockup torque converter solenoid sticking. My truck did that. You can test for this a few ways:

1) Before you take your foot off the gas, put it in neutral and see if it still 'stammers'.
2) Downshift to 2nd gear before you take your foot off the gas. This usually gets the torque converter to unlock.
3) Unplug the lockup solenoid on the left rear of the tranny. This disables overdrive, also, which will hurt mileage, so don't leave it that way too long.

A new solenoid pack is $50 from dealer, plus tranny fluid and gasket.

Could be other things, too, like AIS motor sticking. Check fault codes.

I just went through this same set of symptoms...I've got a 92 3.9L. It would die when I was coming to a stop. If I just actuated the clutch and put it in neutral, it wouldn't die, but if I dropped into neutral and hit the brakes it would. Check your EGR valve. That's what did it for me. About $80 at Advance and it's a 10 minute part swap.

BTW, if you look in your Haynes (or equivelent) manual, it'll tell you all about testing and replacing the EGR.

Good luck,
DJbot
