Subject: Fuel Filter (95 3.9L)

Message:
I just purchased a Fuel sending unit (NAPA/UAP)and it came with sock type filter. The parts place is telling me that I do not need the normal OEM fuel filter mounted on the bottom of the assembly. Actually the OEM filter will not fit the pump assembly. Is this the case? or do I need a different pump?

sounds like

Sounds like NAPA has superceded the original design in order to fit more vehicles, or they gave you the wrong application, or it was possibly misboxed at the manufacturer.

You may want to see if a dealer has one in stock to compare. My recollection of my 95 3.9 is that it had a larger round filter on the bottom, not a sock filter -- and mine was replaced by a NAPA unit a couple of years ago (both the original and the NAPA at that time had the same filter setup).

The guy at NAPA contacted their engineering department and they have made this mod to the part to fix a problem. The pump is the same except for the filter. The truck is running fine now. Better than ever. After fixing the wire splice and changing the fuel pump. It seems it is common to lose the fuel pump after a splice problem. Maybe it is due to the irregular current to the pump. Well anyway the truck runs and that is the main thing.

Thank-you for your ongoing help

Jason
