I just bought a 'handyman special' 92 Dakota Sport 4x4 with lots of 'features'.

One of my main concerns is that the voltmeter occasionally will dip down to around 10 or spike to 18+ momentarily. More often that not it is the spike not the dip. I understand that the voltage is controlled by the computer, but is it possible that it is the alternator itself that is causing the problem? The only code the computer is showing is 41.

Could this also be contributing to the "Microsoft Dakota Syndrome" where the tach drops to 0, you pull off the road and 'reboot' the truck then drive away as if nothing happened? This has happened twice to me in the just under a week that I've had the truck. Cold weather and no garage space open has kept me from looking at the splices yet, hopefully this weekend I can check this out too.

Thanks for your help!

Check that wiring under the underhood fusebox
redo that splice
41** Generator field not
switching properly Open or short in the generator (alternator) field control (regulator) circuit. This indicates a problem with the charging circuit and the fault is set when the battery voltage from the ASD relay falls below 11.75 volts. Wiring, connectors, fuses, and the ASD relay should be checked. A shorted battery cell can also trigger this fault.

I found the thread on the splice earlier this week, but a quick glance isn't relocating it... would someone be kind enough to get me linked back the right direction? You'd be surprised how many topics about "splice" have "41" in the time, triggering a match! :)

Thanks!
