Subject: 92' Dak Won't Start. PLEASE HELP!
IP: Logged

Message:
I have a 92 3.9 V6 Dak Sport. Pulled into a local burger joint about a week ago and that was the last time it ever ran. I replaces the distributor cap and rotor bug after finding the nipple on the bottom where the coil plugs in completely gone, but it still won't start. I've checked both of the notorious splices coming out of the relay/fuse box and found no corrosion and rewrapped them with good electrical tape. Checked and found spark by taking the #1 plug wire and putting a plug in the end of it, grounding the threads and cranking the engine - sparks every time. Tested the valve at the fuel rail and all I get is a one drop with the key in the RUN position, so I think this may be a fuel problem. I checked the DK GRN/BLUE wire coming from the fuse/relay box and found no voltage, so I swapped the fuel pump relay with the starter relay and it cranked over just fine but still would not start, nor built fuel pressure to the rail. I also tried bypassing the fuel relay by shorting the #30 pin hole to the outer #87 pin hole of the fuel relay socket and still got no fuel pressure. I also checked the fuel relay socket and found +12V at the #30,85,86 and inner 87 pin hole of the fuel relay socket. Needless to say, I'm at wit's end trying to troubleshoot this problem. Any ideas where to look next would be greatly appreciated!

When you turn the key on do you hear the whirling sound of the fuel pump? If not then Bob is right, but if you do hear the sound, it might be the pressure regulator...either way, you will probably have to drop the tank.

I was told you could remove the bed to get access to the fuel tank and pump.
Can anyone verify?
Which is the recommended method when replacing the fuel pump?

That would depend. There are 3 different ways to do it. 1.Drop the tank (could be a pain in the *ss if the bolts are rusted. 2.Pull off the bed (also could be a pain but there are less hoses and clamps to disconnect. or 3.Cut a small square hole in the bed(a kind of access plate if you will). Pick and choose, either one if viable

I don't ever hear the fuel pump running when I try to start it. Wouldn't I at least have +12V going to the DK GRN/BLUE wire when the key is in the run position though if the fuel pump is possibly bad?

The DG/BK wire goes from the relay to the fuel pump/module, and if the relay was working, and you had the key turned on, you would get +12V. The fuel pump sound "should" be heard when you first turn the key on...the sound is just the fuel pump raising line pressure on the injectors before you turn the key.

Shouldn't I at least get +12V on the DK GRN/BLUE wire coming from the relay/fuse box when fuel pump socket pins 30 and outer 87 are shorted with the key in the RUN position though, even if the fuel pump IS bad?

Not necessarily. There could be an open in the fuel pump circuit, and you wouldn't be getting a return side(negative) for the current. Are you getting voltage on pin 30 with the key turned on and nothing shorted(I think that would be the Red/White wire)? If not there are connectors in the power box that might be corroded or loose or it could be ignition...that is one of the things that suck about forums...you cant see what you are trying to help with!!
