I've read that the 3.9L V6 has about 175HP at the crank, yet the 3.7L has 210. Why is this? How can a smaller engine have more power?

Lots of ways. Better porting and breathing, more aggressive cam, higher compression ratio. I haven't compared these specs, but they're probably online.

the 3.7 is overhead cam. the 3.9 is a pushrod motor. same way the 4.7 makes more power than the 5.2; technology.

Okay then, lemme ask another question:
For my engine, I've also read about swapping out the air intake and exhaust for after-market parts to increase power.
How much will this cost, and how much of a difference can I sxpect to see from it?

As a friend once said to me when i was trying to get more power out of a small engine. "you can't shine sh--t" Not to say the v6 engine is sh--t certainly not. But if it is power you are looking for buy a V8 and be done with it. No tweaks needed.

You can lots of power out of the 3.9, but it won't be cheap. Mine runs a 14.89 in the 1/4 mile, Larry has a 3.9 that is stroked, gotta have atleast 300 horses at the wheels. It is not a cheap task makeing power out of the 3.9 but makes an interesting build-up. I currently have a 426 HEMI sitting in my garage, haven't decided what to do with it. Either put it in the Dakota or by an old Dart to put it in.

How much would it cost to swap the 3.9 V6 with a V8 engine? Would it even be worth it, or would it be cheaper to just buy a V8 Dakota?

cheaper just to trade a 6 truck for one with a 8 on the open market there is soooo little difference in the KBB price that it makes no sense to do a swap and put all that work into it whan you can trade almost even.

hey man its not the size of ur engine that matter its gonna cost alot to mod any size engine its the love for the truck that makes it fast its all in how u drive and how u take care of it u can beat a v8 with a v6 i no iv done it u just gotta work at it man it ant worth modin if ya ant got the love to keep it and make it better
