Hello all. I'm at the begining of building a blown early (read NON MAGNUM) V6. Right now I gathering parts and need to know an answer to the first of probaly several questions.

What the differece between the "A" motor (318 or 360) and early V6 connecting rods?

Early 90's Mopar Performance catalogs have different part numbers for both pieces.

If they are different can the "A" motor connecting rods be modified to work in the V6?

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

88 SC DAK-i,m doing the samething, the 318 big end[where the bearing goes] is wider then a 3.9[rod]yes it can be machined to work, the 318 is about .065 wider, they both have the same casting number so micro the rods if you get a used one to make sure it is,nt to wide,

why i say this is i have a 89 318 apart and i measured the two rods, perfect match except for the wider bearing area on the 318

the 318 rod is wider on one side only because of the chafering,if you put the two together you can see this

hope this help answer your question

Thanks Vern. Thats the info I was looking for. I have a set of NOS late 340 connecting rods that I want to use in this thing. I'm looking at getting 300 hp with about 8 or 8.5 to 1 compression out of it so the 340 rods should be fine.

Darth Thanks for the site. I will have to go in there and look around at some of the items they have.

this too

something none of the other respondents did not cover is the fact that the rod bearings are a larger diameter then the 318/340 rods are, normaly. however there are 360 rods made to fit on a 318/340 crank. the cost a bit more as they are usually not available everywhere, check with Jegs or Summit as I know I have seen them in at least one of those catalogs.

Thanks for the information but I'm going the 318/340 route. The 360 is staying in my Lil Red Express. I have a set of NOS late 340 rods in this and wanted to make sure I can make them fit before I going much further. I'm looking for about 300 hp so the 340 rods should be OK.

Vern any ideas on how much difference there is between a magnum block and a early block. I have a 92 block and would like to use this if I could instead of the 88. I'm mainly worried about ballancing. The intake of the Magnum will get thrown away so I'm not worried about that. Any help on this, as always, would also be appreciated. Thanks

i don,t think theres any, except for the mag lack of the oil hole in the block that feeds the heads, rockers etc.[because the mags oil threw the push rods]

i put the mag heads,pushrods etc from a 92 3.9 and put it on a 88 3.9 and put it in a 92 dak 4x4
and that was 4yrs back and its still going strong

the only thing i found is the rings, pistons,
mag has a shallow ring groove on the pistons,
the rods have a different casting numder, but i think they will work, all measurements are the same,i don,t no if they weigh the same tho.
if you use all the same rods you should be OK

all 3.9s use the same crank bearings

cams interchange from 88 up,all are rollers,
87s are flat tappet

hope that help answer you question

Vern, I cannot thank you enough. I have a complete 92 engine that I want to get build, but we were worried things would be a little to different for the swap. The more I'm looking the more I think it will be pretty straight forward. I want to just do a swap, I don't want the truck down while the motor and supercharfer gets done. Thanks again.
