Subject: Oil Pressure Gauge

Message:
My problem is this...I have a 1997 Dodge Dakota and my oil pressure gauge reads zero. It started about 6 weeks ago so I brought it to my mechanic. They changed the oil sending unit and told me the problem was fixed. About 2 weeks later the oil pressure gauge dropped to zero again. It only happened once so I ignored it. Now the last couple of days...I start driving the truck and it's at 40 and within 2 minutes it dropps to zero. I brought it back to the mechanic and they supposedly fixed it by changing the sending unit again. I just picked it up and pulled into work and it dropped to zero again. Oh yeah, and the last couple of days it is occassionally making a ticking noise. Please help!

the ticking is caused by the LACK of oil to your lifters and valves. i suggest you drop the oil pan and change the pump and your bearings while you are at it because you probably already destroyed them driving it with no oil pressure. the sending unit is not the problem, your pump is having issues and you need to figure that out, you either have a clogged pick-up or the pump is bad, either way, if you dont fix it, no more truck...dont drive it!

I agree with what 93dak said but did you at least change the oil and filter? There is a chance that you have plugged the oil filter.

I dont think its a plugged filter, they have a bypass in them if it gets plugged, the pump may be bad or the bearings are worn and your pressure drops when the oil gets hot. unusual for no pressure in only 2 min. I would take it to a good mechanic asap!!!! maybe you will get lucky and it won't be so bad.
