I recently purchased an 04 Dakota Reg Cab w/3.7 and auto w/16k miles. I generally love the truck. But, the more I drive it, the more I dislike the lack of ride control over washboard surfaces and humps in the road like speed-bumps. On washboard surfaces, the truck tends to skitter and hop. If humps, like speed bumps, are not taken real slow there is a lot of bouncing up and down. Ordinary road undulations don't cause excessive bouncing. I assume the problem is poor OEM shocks. After only 16k miles, they can't be worn out. Do you think this is the problem? Would someone recommend some good off-the-shelf shocks that won't break the bank?
Thanks,
Bill

It could just be the spring rates. There's alot more at play in this equation than just shocks. try doing the old fashioned bounce test at each corner: try to get the vehical rocking up & down at a corner & let go. the truck should stop bouncing within 1 bounce cycle.

Shocks need to be valved to work well with the spring rates of the aplication; and with an unloaded truck, ours just don't. Adjusting the spring rate by lowering sear tire pressure will help, so will getting premium shocks.

Thanks for the replies. You can't get it to bounce by muscle power or body weight. Yet, go too fast over a speed bump and it bounces several times; mostly the front. I think I'll do some shopping around for some premium shocks. Any recommendations; Carquest, Sears, Monroe, Gabriel, does it matter?
Thanks,
Bill
