Subject: Resetting error codes?
IP: Logged

Message:
In the old days, we could just disconnect the negetive battery terminal for a few minutes, and that would clear any and all trouble codes.

Dealership told me my newer 2003 Dakota doesnt work this way. I was told if this was done, the vehicle would need to be towed to the dealership. He said it wont start, and they have to do something with the computer so it will allow it to start again??? He said all trouble codes must be erased using a computer ( or something like a superchips tuner ). I asked about when a vehicle battery needs to be changed, and was told they use a tool that hooks up to the terminals and keeps a voltage running to the vehicle while the new battery is installed.

Any truth to this? I dont want to try it and end up calling a tow truck to haul it to the dealership.

Yeah they do love that info...
Not sure if the dodge checkes the variables but some cars measure g-force and can also tell when u hit bumps hard bottoming out or ur average speed...I know subarus measure some of what i mentioned cause i bottomed one out and the comp picked that up.

Also some repair shops will do just that, disconnect battery terminal to reset codes then charge u for an hour of labor that took them less then 5 mins.

I have a '97, and thats how I reset all my codes. Jsut pull the battery. The new ones may have some type of RAM that stores info when the battery is removed, which would prevent you from being able to clear the codes.
As far as not removing the battery, like Jason said. Thats B.S. if you look at any service manual, the first thing they tell you to do for most repairs is disconnect the battery.

Yea, how do u spell reaming? Stealerships they are. Two years ago I had the cat changed on my '98 under epa warranty at a stealership. The manager told me i needed a whole new exhaust from the cat back for $325 bucks or so. When i asked him how come it wasen't leaking exhaust or anything he told me it was "about to go". I said yea, it might "go" 3 years from now. Well, I still have the same exhaust system. I guess it's still "about to go".

If you are concerned about disconnecting your battery you can take your vehicle to AutoZone or most auto parts place. They can extract the codes and erase them using the OBDII hand held scanner. There is "No Charge" for this service. they also sell the OBDII scanners (smaller version) for about $75.00. (PS: I work at AutoZone and we read/extract codes and erase them all the time.)

do not worry about your exhaust my truck is 12 yrs old and is running on all stock piping that has all kinds of life left...now the stock muffler and cat...those are a different story, but the pipe is in great shape, so go back and kick him in the balls. and a word to all of you, if you go to a dealership...STOP, its the dumbest thing any person has ever done, all the work that a dakota needs can be done in the driveway in less then an hour and takes simple hand tools. if you dont know how to do it, LEARN...its cheaper and more fun.
