I just bought an 87 4x4. I like it so far... I bought it figuring it would have a few issues. No problem.

One thing I can't figure out is this sound of hissing air that sounds like it comes from behind the dash, directly behind the steering wheel.

The truck doesn't come up to speed well, max 65 on the highway, and really slow uphill.

Also, the sound increases the more I step on the accelerator, pretty loud, and dies out slowly when turning off the vehicle. pshshshshsh.....

any ideas?

theres a hose[small] that comes in to the heater controls on the dash, its vaccumm for the the doors in the heater,

but with it hssssing like you say,it sounds like the vaccumm brake booster is leaking, hows the brake pedal feel?kind of hard on the pedal

the booster is under the hood right above the steering column on the firewall, its black and the brake master cylinder bolts to it

The pedal is a little hard, and it is right inside of the booster...hmmm...you've given me a place to start, thanks.

As far as the low power at highway speeds, and just generally being able to put the pedal to the floor and not have more power... I've been searching keywords and I'm kind of leaning towards a bad catalytic converter. The symptoms sound awfully suspicious.

Thanks again.
