Subject: 2 snow tires vs. 4
IP: Logged

Message:
Hey guys quick question. I have a 94 dakota, 3.9l sport.
THis truck doesn't have 4x4 and i live in maine. I have
been really lazy this winter and have not had my snow
tires put on. My dad has been giving me a lot of crap for
it. I was wondering if it would matter if i just put on the
back 2 or if i should just put on all 4 tires. I was under
the impression if you had a front wheel drive car then
you needed to put all 4 on but not when you have a
rear-wheel drive truck. THanks

Only need them on the " drive " axle.
Just be sure to have decent treaded tires on
the other end as well to help steering/braking

i think stopping is more important then the going part....keeps you from hitting things or people. but up here is worse then probably everywhere..we have about 4 ft on the ground and this place has huge hills. but i would say put on all 4 for safety sake, no sense in being lazy about it.

if your front tires aren't in bad shape, only worry about the two in the back. If your front tires are worn out (no/bad tread) then you might as well put on all 4

not true, very not true, try stopping in the snow with two bald front tires and you will see exactly what I mean.
Just be sure to have decent treaded tires on
the other end as well
that will only work when you have less then an inch of fresh, if you get into ice too bad as the rubber on snows is a lot "stickier" in the wet and on ice and snow then summer tires. I got a 1 wheel drive type drive system (open diff)on mine but am runnin Dueller A/T Revo's all around, it goes and stops a lot better in the snow then the BFG Radial T/A's it runs in the summer.

Thundpar1986,

You sound like a young inexperience fellow. You have the tires, but they are not on, and you live in a place with lots of snow. Not to menton the fact that your dad is hounding you.

My suggestion is to remove the tires completely from the front, the endges of the rims will cut in the snow nice (like carbides on a snowmoble). Mount a plow on the front, so you can drop it when you need to stop. And go to your local hardware store and buy a large box of 1-1/4" long hexhead screws for the back tires. you'll need about 200 per tire.

Hope you put it in a ditch because thats where it belongs.
