Seems that there is alot of bad info here on flushing and filling. I can't seem to find a clear "how-to" on flushing the ATX. The general way to do this is to disconnect one tranny cooler line, start the motor and drain into a bucket. Turn off the motor when the flow begins to trickle. Fill with about 4 quarts of 7176 (if I'm not mistaken on the spec'ed ATX fluid)and then run the motor again to flush a little more old oil out. (repeat last step as necessary or if you are really rich or use low cost ATX for the flush part) Hook up the cooler, add more fluid, and heat up the tranny. Check level and top-off fluid.

So the question is has anybody tried this on a dakota? Which side of the cooler did you use? How much "flush" fluid did you use. Does 50,000 miles sound like a good atx flush interval?

Please, please, don't post on using atx+4 or synthetic or suggest we go the the shop. I want to do it myself and use the manufacturers spec'd 7176 atx fluid. Thanks for the input.

Im not sure what your talking about, but when we hook the trannys up to the machine at work, we need more like 15 quarts to flush the entire trans and torque converter.

Your method will work. I've seen another documented by one of the lube mfrs that says you can also try to be tricky and pour in fluid while it is running. regardless, your method sounds fine - and you will use more than 4 quarts. probably 8-10. Also, you may want to stop when the pan is empty and pull it to change the filter, if its never been changed. Also, I completely understand the "flush" concept - but I have usually just dropped the pan or used a suction tool and changed it that way. yes, I know, you dont get all the fluid - but I change it every 15-20K. I drive alot, tow alot, and have never had a trans problem in 20 years. most of my trucks go 150-200K miles.

Just change the filter and fluid twice in 5000
miles and you will be 90% changed filter and
gasket from Auto Zone only $6

Use ATF +3 or 4
Amsoil syn
Redline syn

No dextron or cheap fluids

A power flush is not always a good idea it can
pick up dirt and cause valves to stick not
recomended for tranys with lots of miles on them
unless there is a problem than its worth a try
to see if it will solve the prob other wise just
a fluid and filter change is all that is needed
