Subject: Coolant loss????

Message:
It is cold here in OH right now and my 99 Dakota has trouble heating up. I don't think it is the thermostat because it reaches running temp. The problem is solved by adding coolant to the overflow but I must be loosing coolant somewhere, cause the coolant goes back to being low after a month or so. I smell coolant when I park the truck but can't seem to locate a puddle on the ground. Any ideas?

My 97 had a small leak that never made it to the ground. the TSTAT gasket leaked just a little, but not enough to drip off the engine. The area arount the housing was always wet and it should not bee. I tightened down the 2 bolts and it stopped being wet. My Father-in-Law had the same leak on his 97.

might seem dumb, but is the heater core leaking inside of the truck? I just found this problem on my '95.

Yea I had the same problem, my 2000 would eat coolant, yet I saw no puddle. They found the gasket around the thermostat was to blame. It still eats a little coolant, I am convinced that all dakotas have the same problem, my 94 was the same. One reason my be that the colder temp has caused the rubber gasket around the thermo to shrink, and/or the salt has finally ate it for lunch. Both my trucks never seemed to warm up well, I think it is becaue the radiator was designed for the V-8's, they just put it into the v-6's to save money. By the way, I'm from Ohio too, those road crews love salt (and I have a black truck)!!

WELL !!!! I just had a new 195 thermostat installed and the temp gauge still doesn't move very much , but the truck heater does get hotter. I hope that helps some of you guys.( ( ( ( ( ( ( By the way all my guy did was undo the 2 ( TWO ) thermostat bolts , he never had to undo any other bolts or brackets , he didn't even have to take off the rad hose. ) ) ) ) ) ) )

i have a 195 thermostat in my truck right now, i am in the upper penninsula of michigan and its about 16 degrees outside (its a warm day). but my best advice for getting heat out of your truck is let it warm up. my truck takes a long time to get warm and only runs about 160 i would guess (no numbers on the guage) up here.
