My 97 3.9 seems to be running colder this winter. It is only getting to about 170. Is this normal and is putting cardboard on the grille the best way to raise temp? I seem to be losing MPGs and heat. I will try Dans heater core flush too. I just want to make sure I am not missing anything. Oh and it has been in the 20s the last week here. Thanks.

what t/stat are you running? if it's a 180 you prolly need to switch to a 195 for the winter.

WTF?? Cardboard? Are you driving a semi? Its cold, there for your truck may not run as hot as usual. If this worries you you might want to do what daddio sujested. Your thermistar could be stuck parcialy open or not be able to close all the way.

hey 00dak, i've had to do the cardboard thing. there is nothing wrong with it for a quick "temporary" fix. the operative word here is temporary.

cold 97, it could you your t/stat is stuck open. i made the mistake of putting in one of those el cheapo, fail open t/stats from autozone. never again.

I will check the t-stat. Is it doing any harm to run cold? Sorry for the stupid questions but I fix houses not cars. One coworker says running cold is good. Thanks for your input.

It won't harm anything for it to run cold. As long as it is above 160. Your heat may not be as strong.

No, heat is not very hot. Was going to try and backflush heater core like others have done with success. I don't mind getting my hands dirty, just not great at diagnosing. Don't like doing something to find it wasn't the problem(which I have done!).

i have a 98 3.9 and it too is running cold, i have installed a 195 tstat, checked the coolant level, and have put a piece of cardboard in front of the radiator. the tstat i put in was from autozone, can you recommend a good quality name brand for future use. if i'm on the highway i can get heat, but as soon as the rpms decrease so does my heat. thanks for any help

cold 97, do you have both the electric fan and clutch for cooling? if so yank that clutch fan off. that may help a little

tar, a good t/stat is STANT. you may be able to do the same as i just mentioned. i have an '00 and have had the clutch fan off for about a year. doesn't even come close to overheating in the summer.
