Ok here is the scoop; I bought a 1997 Dakota Sport, 4X4, Extended Cab with 55000 for $6000. Its was also in brand new condition. Sounds to good to be true, it was, this damn truck cost me an arm & and leg, Here is a list of the things that I had to replace I know for of them are wearable parts but some are not. I think this is the last dodge that I will own, This was the first used truck that I bought and I repaired it more than another truck that I had.

Ball Joints
Alignment
Tires
Water Pump
Timing chain set
Exhaust
Brakes pads
Rotors
Battery
Vacuum Hose

This list is also in the order that the repairs were made. The only thing that is keeping me from selling it is that, knowing my luck I will sell it and the person who buys it will never have problems cause I worked out all the bugs. So guys what is your take on this?

Well you knew the balljoints were crap before you bought it if you did any research prior to purchase, the only other items that are not maintnence are water pump and timing chain, everything else is a wear and tear item. Does it suck, yes, but hey you bought a Dodge not a toyota

Sounds to me like typical wear and tare on a 7 almost 8 year old vehicle. It happens to them all. Low miles doesnt mean low maintance.

Just my .02

Didn't look at the tires or brakes?

Dodge didn't make the battery!

Go buy new next time, if you want a perfect truck!

Yea I drove it and the tires were worn evenly so I though I just needed tires and an alligmment, then I read about the ball joints. Im thinking its a lemon and I should sell it. Some people told me when If I have to put anothing $1000 into in the next 12 months fix it and sell it. I love the truck. I was also thinking of buying a chevy colbolt as a dail driver and us the truck as a weekend truck. So my question is how far is to far. When should I stop putting money in this truck?

I would have to ask at what mileage intervals you replaced these items. Alot of factors determine when things will need to be replaced. I consider tires, brakes, rotors and batteries normal "maintenance". Depending on how the previous owner drove the truck may have predetermined when some of those items needed to be replaced. For example: short trips of 1 or 2 miles in duration can be very hard on the exhaust. I have seen trucks that needed the muffler replaced at 10,000 miles. I have a friend who has a surburban his wife drives it mostly and rides the brakes going down hill and had to replace the brakes at every 20,000 miles. My 92 4x4 dak needs the fron tires replade every 35,000 miles if I dont rotate them. Water pumps and timing chains should last to 100,000 miles.
Like you said you may have all the bugs out it, it may be worth it to keep it. Just my thoughts.

92 and 97 Daks both with many mods.

Crap. I've had my dakota since new and have had to replace all but 2 of those items. I bought new so I wouldn't HAVE to worry about that stuff. WRONG.

Gee, and I thought I paid to much when I bought my 01 extended cab for $4,500. It came with new 245/16 tires.
