Subject: Cold air intake

Message:
Hello all, newby here. I've got a question for you. I have a '97 sport 2wd, 5sp., 3.9v6 dakota. Currently the truck has a dynomax superturbo muffler and a k&n drop in filter. I am kind of thinking of doing a home-brew cold air intake with the 6x9 cone filter. My question is do I need to worry about getting too cold of air to my truck. I live in north dakota and -30 degrees ferenheit in not uncommon during the winters. Will adding the cold air intake hamper performance, engine, etc. with this cold air? Thanks for your insight.

it might be -30 outside but your engine is still burning hot inside. cold air always helps on induction. But it probably takes a while to warm up with those temps. Do you have to block your radiator to warm up fast?

No, it only takes a couple of miles of driving to heat things up(especially being a reg. cab). The v6 seems to heat up pretty quickly once I start to drive, but not very fast if I just let it sit there and idle. Go figure:-)

thats because at idle you are only doing less than 1000 rpms... if you drive you rev up and down so the engine warms up faster.

Intense, did you do have a cold air intake on your rig? If so, does it give a fairly noticable gain in power, milage, etc. I'm not real concerned about milage-if I was I'd be driving a car. Also, have you ever heard of anyone cuting out the bottom of the stock air box to increase airflow? How do you think this compares to a cone filter settup. Is there a point where a guy can go to far as far as airflow into the engine?

never heard of cutting the bottom out of the box but it would help... only get hot engine air but it still would help air flow. can't really go to far. your computer can adjust to anything that it can suck up naturally. just remember the more air you get in to the engine, the more air you need to get out of the engine. so show the same sympathy towards your exhaust as your intake. if you want to go cheap you can easily build your own with a 3" exhuast pipe, clamps and a k&n cone filter.

oh, i have the mopar cold air intake... i noticed a big difference than before i had it. at first i just got a S&B cone filter (from my shelby) and but it on the air hose and sat that where the air box was. that was an improvement over stock. even felt the computer adjust. but the cold air intake did even better than that.

Hey Intense...I'm assuming you got the Mopar air intake at your local dealer. Do you really like it, or do you think that a K&N FIPK would do the trick better? Soon I'll be putting a cowl induction hood on my Dak (waiting on tax returns!) and was wondering which would be the best to go with...performance wise. Thanks!

they are the same thing... one's got "Mopar Performance" on it and the other "K&N". i think that mopar performance is a lot cooler looking then k&n. but the mopar cold air cost more. me, i got the employee discount because i know everyone at the dodge dealer (my other home). but another place to look where i think the cost as much as or less than the k&n is www.kollerdodge.com, i think it was like $249 compared to the dealer $375, but i payed $246 after taxes because of the discount.

what color is your truck? i am thinking about selling mine... and looking for a fiberglass one.

can't really help you with the drop... hell, i need help with my front end. all i have is Fabtech 2" lift springs cut down by 2 coils. i would look at www.kollerdodge.com for the mopar cold air kit... cheapest i have seen for consumers.
about the lowering... all i have heard is don't get anything manufactured by AIM... i purchased my ladderbars from them but Chassis Tech makes them.

as soon as i get done making my truck fast (or blowing it up doing so) i am going to put 2 inch lower control arms on and 1 or 2 inch lowering springs. but i might get crazy and slam the front and then adjust my coilovers in the back to slam the back.

Say, got another intake inquiry for ya. If a guy were to leave the factory air filter box but re-route the air duct leading to the box to that open area to the passanger side of the radiator-do you think that would suck in a lot of crap and clog the filter? A guy could put a screen at the opening to the front to help. wouldn't this give it a ram-air kind of a effect? I already have a drop in k&n and would prefer to utilze the one I already have instead of getting a 360 element. If this is a dumb question, I apologize, I am at work and a little bored so I'm just looking for something to do.

Well, what I was thinking was having the tube slant downlards right off of the airbox. this way the rain would have to travel uphill to reach the filter, plus I could drill a drain hole in the bottom of the air box. The only problem I might have is since I live in north dakota, the possibility of sucking up snow. I don't know how much worse this set-up would compare to the factory location of the passanger fender compartment as far as snow and rain? Gives me something to think about:-)

Hey Stevo, I got an answer for your lowering question, there are two ways you can go, You said you want the best so, Hands down for 97 and above Daks you will want to go with either DJM, or contact a company called Sport Truck Direct. They carry DJM parts and Hoetchkins (sp). They will be able to get you down on the ground the right way. I have an 87 so I can use different options, To the best of my Knowledge AIM isn't a good way to go, I found that out the hard way. I only bought 2 inch drop springs, but they are lopsided, so I'll have to get with Sport Truck again and get Hoetchkin springs. You may also want to check with Autobanh @Zmotive.com They to carry a good line of lowering kits. Check around for the best prices.

you can go to autozone and get a cold air intake for about 60 bucks
but its not for a dakota its for a 92-96 integra ,but it works just as well as a k&n all you have to do is flip the rubber piece on the end over

Hey Andy,
What you're refering to with the air-box and re-routing the intake. . . I've done it already and there is quite a difference. I'll be posting pictures at my site soon but in the meantime, this is what I did. I pulled off the stock intake tube and replaced it with bendable aluminum exhuast tubeing (OSH or HomeDepot $3). Also placed a 4" to 3" flange on the inside of the box to keep the tube from moving. Routed the hose up next to the radiator but just lower than the bottom of the box and cut a 3" hole in the asphalt matting. Cut 4 or 5, 1/2 inch slits in the tubing and bend back against the matting and pull the tube back in towards the box (this makes the mat secure firmly around the pipe and also acts as a funnel for the inlet). The box already has a drainage hole in the bottom and the slight angle of the inlet won't let much (if any)moisture in and the truck grill keeps debris out.
It works awesome for me and it only cost me $3 bucks. That's a lot less than $300. Less effective I'm sure, but WAY better than stock.

Just my 3.9 cents :-)
1998 3.9 ext cab 4x4, 5 1/2 inch lift, 33x12.50's, 180 out stat, home-made air intake, turned down SpinTech exhaust and enough noise to wake the neighbors.
