Mine is a 93 Dakota Club Cab, 3.9L, 4x4, 5spd. I blew the original engine by sucking water up the intake (bent rod & broken piston) while bowhunting elk hunting last September, but replaced it with a used 95 3.9L. The original ran great at 145k miles, and the replacement runs even better. I'm not sure how many miles it has on it, but it's a good one. I had no mods on the original, but have done some minor ones on the 95. (K&N drop-in air filter, home-made air duct made from 3" abs, IAT relocated, TPS modified & adjusted to 0.78v, 180 thermostat, autolite 3923 plugs, and a Dynomax Super Turbo muffler.) Our 93 Dakotas come with 3" exhaust, so no further exhaust mods have been done. All this for about 150 bucks. I had no complaints with the way it ran before, but man what a performer now! I'll be sure not to get into anymore stream crossings in beaver ponds next hunting season. My only complaints with this truck are the WIDE turning radius and the low front end. Both are detrimental to Colorado trail busting. Thanks for listening(reading?).

It is good to read these posts.
Of course it is natural on a board such of this to read about problems with the Dakota. So you would get the idea that the Dakota has a lot of problems.

I have a 2000 v6 QC 4x4 with $38k miles and haven't had any problems.

I'm chasing you, I have a 95 CC 4x4 3.9 auto with 147k miles. And since I just did some work on it, i can now pass a few gas stations :D. I got 24.05 mpg on highway last night (70-75mph). City should be around 18-20 (a month ago i was getting < 15mpg regardless if city, highway or combined).

What did you do to get your mpg up? I've tried a few things and I'm still sitting at about 15 mpg combined, about 18 highway. Thanks

I hate to be negative, but I have a 2000 with about 73,000 on it and I haven't been happy with the 3.9L at all (see "Possessed V-6" posting). I have a problem with the way it will give itself fuel when I'm off the throttle causing the RPMs to stay high instead of decelerating when I shift. I think my TPS could be one of the culprits. So this question is directed to Rick: how did you modify your TPS and IAT? Also, the things spark-knocks something awful with 87-octane -- I have to put 89 in it. Otherwise, no major problems yet.

To kmjone00: I moved the IAT by unscrewing it from the intake manifold, plugged the hole with a 1/4" npt plug, extended the wires about a foot, drilled a hole in my abs airduct, and screwed the sensor in. Didn't tap the hole, the abs was soft enough to thread into. Plug the connector back in, and that's it. The TPS is adjusted by removing it from the TB(2 torx screws), drill out the 2 metal bushings that the screws go through(1/4" bit will spin them until they get hot and push through), and put it back in the TB using a #10 washer on each screw. Adjust the voltage by turning the sensor counter-clockwise and tightening the screws when you are between 0.0700v and 0.900v. I think around 0.750v is supposed to be best, but mine maxed out at 0.785v and I left it there. Check the voltage by poking the positive probe of a voltmeter through the grey rubber gasket at the middle wire on the sensor. The ground probe can be grounded anywhere you can get a GOOD ground. Check with the key ON, engine not started. When you're done and start it up, don't touch the accelerator. I let mine run a couple minutes, shut it off, and reset my PCM.(disconnect neg. battery cable, turn and hold ignition switch at START position for 20 seconds, and then reconnect the neg. cable). Speedtweaks gives these instructions-that's what I followed for mine. You ought to read those-I might have left out some helpful details here. Good luck.

entiland,

I "flushed" the engine out... I did an oil change and filled w/ 1 quart of transmission fluid and rest oil. Ran for 500 or so miles -tranny fluid knocked alot of sludge off with was caught in filter. did oil change, put in all oil to "rinse" it. running it for about 1000 miles (will be changing oil this weekend). I will repeat, then after i rinse with oil 2nd time, going to change to synthetics.

I did find that some places now have a billstein manufactured machine with accomplishes this. They run a cleaning solution through it to remove sludge. I saw pepboys has it and costs around $90. This is probably a "safer" method to flush the engine.

this caused my mpg to go up from 14-15 to 18.2 combined and 20.2 highway. Then i replaced timing chain and warped pully. with all oil on first "rinse" and the new parts i got the 24.05 mpg all highway.

prior to the oil/transmission thing, I did tuneup - plugs (autolight), wires (autolight), pcv, air filter, fuel filter, new v-belt. I also replaced my one and only oxygen sensor.

thanks Dan M,
I have done the other tune ups that you mentioned at the end, so I think it's time to clean w/ the transmission fluid. I have heard of this before, so hopefully it will help out. Thanks again

A friend of mine did the tranny fluid in the oil trick and that is now why I own a '93 Dakota. I think the sludge he knocked loose clogged his oil pump, because it spun a main bearing. Motor was toast and he didn't want to piss with it. He gave the truck to me! I found a '92 3.9 with 230k miles on it for 60 bucks. Runs like a champ and I love my "new" truck.

Bottom line is, I wouldn't run the tranny fluid too long before flushing. Oh, when I pulled the heads off of the bad motor, there was still 3/8" of sludge. The motor I installed was clean a a whistle. Guy had changed oil every 3k and slick 50ed it every 50k.

Later.

my 93 ain't runnin too good..

- maybe i missed something when i did the mod?

as we speak- my old 88 dakota runs a lil better than my 93...
