96 3.9 2wd auto Last week, I was about 350 miles from home, on the interstate, when my Dakota died. I could re-start, but it ran very rough - (backfiring through the carb, sounding like a diesel). When I would give it gas, it would stall. Had it towed to a PEP Boys (only place open on a Sunday am) and was told the AIC Motor was dirty. They cleaned (?) it and I was on my way.

150 miles later, it died again. Had it towed to another PEP Boys (its now sunday night) to have it looked at in the am. This shop tells me that there are many codes (12, 14, 43, 43, 43, 51, 52)and that my head gaskets are blown (both) and to take it to an engine shop. (!) I begged them to do whatever the last shop had done, so that I might at least be able to drive it to a dealer. They did, and it ran fine.

I was able to drive back home (200 miles) with no incident...In fact, it ran better than before and got 24.5 mpg! I haven't driven it in a few days, and now I see an oil AND a transmission fluid leak!

Could they be related or is it just it's time?

Any insight? BTW, I had bought FOR SALE signs the day before all this happened! ARGH!

Sounds like ' poor ' electrical connections
from all those codes !!
Check battery cables/connections
and "grounds" = chassis connections -tighten up
Also possible ASD relay in underhood fusebox
and /or the harness from it..
May have that poor [ splice ] of 3 or 4 wires
needs to be redone..
As for the leaks = may be ( just due )..
