Ok, so I'm in the middle of my premagnum to magnum 3.9 swap, and I find out that my tranny isn't an AX-15, but instead it is a NP535/2500. Appearently this is the transmission mother mopar choose from 1987(which is what I have) up untill 1992(which is the engine I plan to swap in). Does anyone have any information on this transmission? I've searched the net, and I've found bearing and seal repair kits, but I'm curious to know if this tranny will bolt up to a magnum 3.9 or not. I've already gotten the flywheel from a magnum motor. I'm hoping all I'll have to do is modify the bellhousing and everything should button up nicely. Any information on this project is greatly appreciated.

I have an 88 and its the same as yours, yes the trans will fit. just use the same bell housing that was on the 87. If that's possible, if not the 92 should still work. I think you will have to use the 92 because it has the hole for the crank sensor. while you have them out you can look and see if they are the same. When you pull the 87 eng. measure the bellhousing from the where the trans mounts to the pilot bearing, and do the same with the 92 I'll bet they are both the same, and the bolt pattern should also be the same.

I believe I asked Larry about this once and I recall him saying that they are all inter changeable though imo I would really try to find an AX-15 or NV3500 tranny the NP535 feels extremely weak to me... Like the others have said you may have issues with the bell housing in regards to the CPS that mounts to the bell housing. I myself am planning on an LA 3.9L to a Magnum 3.9L sometime this winter just saving the money to have the magnum rebuilt. but I got lucky and have acquired a '93 Dakota Sport parts truck for 550$ (owner thought tranny was bad it was just a really really bad filter) and a NV3500 out of a wrecked '95 Dakota for 100$ but anyways again imo i would upgrade that tranny from everything I have heard its weak...
