Heres some tips. True duals on a 3.9 dont work, not enough backpressure for true duals. Alternative is single into muffler and dual 2" or 2.25" out of muffler. I have a 2.5" stock system, just replaced muffler with flowmaster deltaflow 40 series, and it sounds great. Alot more aggressive and stock muffler (which lasted 115,000 miles). Although a little noisy inside, but I dont mind at all, not terribly bad though. This will also help your ponies a little. Second, add a CAI (cold air intake) and remove stock air filter box/system. I used a CAI made for 98/00 civic, made 2 mount brackets and bought a $5 connector for connecting 3.5" polished intake tube to air hat. And also use K&N cone filter on the end (hint.. straighter the tube the better and with least bends as possible for better air flow). Also TONS of other mods available, just search. My truck gained estimated 5-10HP with these 2 mods (done correctly)
Hope this helps

I run a high flow cat and muffler then dual out. Sounds great!! I just replaced the cat for the first time and muffler 3rd time. I saw an increase of almost 1 MPG in the city with the replacements. I noticed the sound increase right way too. No problem reving past 4000-4500 at 200000 miles.

Hearthrob makes a dual kit. splits after the cat, has 2 stainless muffler tips (straight or angle cut). after inspection (i'm in PA, i plan on removing the cat. also, the tips just bolt on, so if im in a "i want to be really loud and annoying" mood, i can take off the tips in bout a minute. bam! instant headache!

Uh...tips don't normally make a huge sound difference unless they're those fancy resonator thingy (yes, I am great with names...lol) tips. If you had a simply bolted on muffler, that's another story...

Geez, dont even get me started on removing the cat, they are there for a reason, trust me the government wants them on there to keep you lungs nice and your kids lungs nice. And truly it makes very little difference in power from what I have been told. But yeah unless its a resonator a tip will make no difference in sound, the only exception being a turndown. And unless you want serious body rattling and loud in cab noise a turn down under the bed is not for you. That is my current setup as of saturday and already im going back to my rear exit y-pipe pseudo duals.

I love my turndown...but yeah, the interior resonance is bad. I can't keep anything in my doors or it vibrates like a sonofabitch...

I also live in PA, we have emissions in the Philadelphia area, so you can not remove the cat and pass unless you know someone who will do it.

Meineke does a nice CAT-Back high flow system. Thye used Flowmaster 40 for my recent exhaust change out (Had a single outlet Gibson before the flowmaster setup, the FM is WAY better IMHO).

Peace!
