Subject: Need Info "Best Bang For $$$"
IP: Logged

Message:
I may have some spare money set aside for another mod, but I can not decide on what exaclty I want to do, so I would like to know some info and personal opinions on the subjects at hand...

To start with my objective is to mainly get better fuel mileage and then the bonus be extra hp... I would also like to keep it under three hundred and some odd dolars "that includes shipping which is just about outragious these days like gas prices"...

The mods that I am thinking about doing, and will do all eventually, but would like to know the best for now are,,,

- electric cooling fan "thermostat control and reliable"
- upgrading rockers to 1.7's "currently have 1.6 crowers" Need to know extra valve lift before doing so because those who know, know I'm allready running a cam with .512" on intake and .520" on exhaust, but I only have valve springs that are good through .500" or .520" --- would it hurt running the even higher 1.7's on the current valve springs, I assume not since I beleive Larry is running an even higher cam profile with the 1.6's
- superchips tuner "this would probably be a great upgrade for me since I allready have so many mods that I'm sure the current computer can't compensate to the fullest of, like the cam, head port, intake, exhaust and so forth"

I'm currently leaning toward the electric fan simply because I'm going to be moving to the city, I don't have a fan shroud "simply because I didn't want to pull everything back out when I noticed I hadn't put it in before I had put in the radiator, plus I don't have any overheating problems unless I'm sitting for an hour idling on the hot days of the summer out on the highway in traffic jams" Plus I figure this would help free up some power in the up to 3000 rpm range on top of giving me maybe a 1 mpg improvement...

I've also got to order another case of oil along with a few more oil filters to do my 20,000 mile oil change... Oh and I pulled my valve covers off at around 10,000 miles to do a rocker adjustment check and the valve covers are actually cleaner "all of the baked on kinda stuff from the previous oil is being cleaned off"...

I'm looking mainly for a low end torque increase "mainly for pulling mountains better, 1000 to 2000 rpm range", more power in the low end "better take offs", and an improvement in fuel mileage... If anyone knows of something else that I haven't thought of I would greatly appreciate the info and all thoughts are appreciated on the mods that I have listed above...

Thanks Again for any input,
Greg

yes on the 1.7s they can and will hurt the valve springs if there only for .520 lift, the 1.7s will put you in the .550 range, possable spring bend, retainers hit valve guides plus check valve to piston clearance

sounds like you know what you need to do,with all the mods, supertuner should help all around

Increasing valve lift even further isn't gonna do much for low end grunt (this is more a higher rpm HP thing), and like Vern said, you're gonna have valve guide/retainer issues. For better low rpm power, you need a cam with a tighter lobe separation and a bit more duration...might even trade off a little lift for a better grunt cam. Granted, all this is relative. Your results may vary, as they say.

the super chips would not help you as much as a custom flash would. super chips even states that they are not ment for modded motors. call krc and talk to them about a custom flash..so that way it wil b tuned to ur motor

Running more lift and duration will hurt low end
no on the 1.7's unless you upgrade the springs

Elect fan and crank pully will help all 3 if you
don't do a lot of city stop and go driving

Gaskit match the intake will help the port has a
big peice of casting hanging down that hurts the
flow some are so bad the injector spray actualy
hits and sprays back

Lower gears will also help, shift kit will help
holding the gears higher with less throttle try
adjusting the TV cable

A jet stage 2 will help gas mileage

I havent done that many mods to my 2001, but the one that made the most seat of the pants improvement for the buck was replacing the throttle body. I installed one of the modified stock units from Hughes Engines.....big improvement and only about $175 exchange.

Well I thought everybody allready knew all of my mods, but I guess I'll just list them again...

From hughesengines ---

- Her0814al "cam" int. .512" - 208 degrees durration at .050" & exh. .520" - 214 degrees durration at .050" (lobe sep is 114)
- double roller timing chain
- chain tensioner
- stage 1 intake with ports opened to 52mm

From socaldakota ---

- 1.6 rr's
- guideplates
- pushrods for correct ride path on valve stem

From fiveomotorsport ---

- stage 3 fuel injectors "19lb"

From v8performance ---

- gibson headers
- gibson dual catback
- carsound cat

From krcperformance ---

- msd blaster coil
- msd ignition system

From asp ---

-underdrive crank pulley

Things I've done myself ---

- port and polish heads
- extra angle to each valve
- .020" head shave
- degreed cam
- holley 52mm tb with torque steps removed and ported some more
- s-bolt mod
- advanced fuel sync 3 degrees
- advanced timing 4 - 5 degrees
- 180 tstat
- set tps to .9 volts
- relocated iat to cold air intake
- cold air intake - replaced filter with exstream "cone type" from K&N
- removed rubber flap
- tornado insert
- ap3923 plugs gapped to .060" (didn't degree this last time and lost nearly .5 to 1 mpg, but I'm not worrying about that too much, because I can't find anyone with degreeing washers around here anymore)
- also running Amsoil dual bypass system with 0-30 severe service motor oil
- using Mobil 1 gear in rear diff and tranny
- use fuel system cleaner "high amounts" every 1000 miles

Then of course all of the other stuff that goes along with mods such as gaskets, bolts, pushrods, lifters and so forth...

Right now I've decided to go with the electric fan simply because - it's the cheepest mod listed, it'll put less strain on water pump, it'll let the engine pick up faster from idle and all through-out the rpm range as Larry pointed out, it'll keep my temp regulated better, and it'll pull more air through simply because it's attached to the radiator and I currently don't have a fan shroud, so right now if I'm stuck in traffic the fan is just recirculating hot air plus it's not pulling that much air through while idling due to the fact that it can only turn as fast as the engine's running and now I have the underdrive pulley which also means that it now turns even slower while idling, so the electric fan would just about be running full flow while the engine is idling unlike the regular fan...

So that being now said, does anyone know of a fairly cheap but fairly high quality electric fan... The best one I have found so far from flex a lite is the 15 incher that pulls 2400 or 2500 cfm's plus it doesn't draw that many amps and it comes with thermostat adjuster and it just clamps around radiator instead of bolting through it... Would I also need other electrical wiring or does it come with everything??? Also are there any other better units out there for the same or about same price???

Thanks Again for everything,
Greg

I think the best bang for the money is at the Bunny Ranch in Vegas. It may seem way over priced, but those girls are amazing.

Jeremy,

That's not the kinda "best BANG for your buck" he was talking about, at least I don't think so. However I do agree that that would be a GREAT " BANG FOR YOUR BUCK"....OH MY ;-)
