I have a '99 Dakota V6 4x4 and about a week ago the engine started to get louder when I give it gas/accelarate. It seems like the fan is turning faster than normal, thus causing the roar. It is not noticeable at idle.
My buddy said to check the fan by turning it by hand (with the motor off, of course), and see what happens. It easily turns about a 1/4 of a turn and the it seems to catch and you have to use more force.
Does my friends assessment of the fan clutch going bad seem like a good diagnosis, or does anyone else have any other suggestions. Thanks.

I removed my clutch fan because it sounded like a roaring monster when I started it. When the fan is cold it will turn with some friction, but as it speeds up, the fluid becomes "less stiff" allowing it to freewheel. Mine worked fine, but I kept on waking my wife when I went out to work in the morning. I replaced it with an electric fan and themostat controller (the fan was a freebie, otherwise I wouldnt have spent the money on it). My old fan is in perfect conditon if you are interested. Make me an offer (includ the shipping).

Thanks for the offer, but I probably need to get it fixed this weekend. I have already priced the new ones and they are around $50.
The way my luck is, it will go completely out if I don't get it done now.

Actually, the fan clutch has a thermostatic bi-metal spring that controls when it kicks in and out. When it senses hot air coming thru the radiator it speeds the fan up and when the air cools down, it de clutches the fan. A proper working fan clutch is not only important for keeping the engine cool in slow traffic but also to keep good air flow thru the AC condenser helping the AC to cool better.

Thanks for everyone's help. Replaced the clutch and it did the trick. Bad thing is while we were replacing it, my buddy became worried about my belt tensioner. Seems like the spring is weak, so I guess that will be the next thing to replace. Always something I guess....
