Subject: thunking noise when turning
IP: Logged

Message:
Hi I have a 1992 3.9 auto w/ 138,000 miles (I have owned this since new). A while back I noticed a thunking noise when I make a sharp turn (like turning out of a red light), that sounds like metal grinding against metal. It is even worse if you slightly apply the brakes. About 1500 miles ago (about 8 months ago) I got the idler arm replaced in my truck, and this temporarily solved the problem. About 3 weeks ago this started again, and it was worse than ever. I would like to know why my truck makes this noise, and what I can do about it.
Sometimes at really low speeds (like 1-2 mph) it will make the noise even if the wheel is turned only a few degrees, but it isn't as loud and the thumps don't occur as often in this situation.

Thanks for your help!

Either that, or if you have 4x4 one of your cv joints could be going.
