I have searched up a number of threads about modifying the stock intake on the 3.9L. Every thread has said to get rid of the elbow and remove the rubber near the radiator. It sounds good to me, except i cant help but wonder about water getting into my engine. I havent seen an answer to this question anywhere i looked. Will doing this let water in if its raining? Also, i am under warranty, so would this void my warranty in any way?

If you are talking about the flap over the intake opening, it should be fine. I removed mine 4 or 5 years ago. I have driven in plenty of rain. I even was driving once with the tornado sirens blaring in 75+ MPH winds and hit a wall of rain. It was unbelievable. If water would ever get in the intake, it would have then. It didn't hurt anything. Luckily also, the tornado only briefly touched down a few blocks away and damage was minimal.

Did you take off the elbow piece directly on the intake or the rubber on the grill? Or did you take of both? I am thinkning of taking both off and that is why water getting into the engine comes to mind.

I just removed the restrictor on my 95 CC SLT 4x4 w/ 3.9. Mine was plastic, not rubber. It seems to have helped my rough idle problem, but will need to drive the truck more to make a better determination. The rest of my stock intake system was left alone. I don't see how water can make it's way into the filter. sure some may make it into the tube, but at least on my vehicle, it's a slight upgrade incline frm the grill to the filter assembly. Maybe if you'r driving in deep water that is.

I have taken out both, rubber and elbow. Also added a KN filter to the factory box. My Dakota is a 2003. So far, I havent had any water getting in thru the filter box due to rain. And yes, I have droven thru lots of rain.

Maybe, someone has a different experience on this subject.

This was the last mode that I made. I can feel some power.

I have SuperChips Max Micro Tuner, 180 stat, 8mm. plug cable, MSD Coil p/n 8228, Brass Cap & Rotor, factory plugs gap at 0.46, and the KN filter plus elbow and rubber removed.

I am thinking about the next mod that I will be making. Probably will be new Bosh injectors, roller rockers @1.7 ratio and or 48mm TB. Not sure which to do first.

I trimmed the plastic elbow so the front of it is open, installed it upside down in the airbox, so it acts as an air scoop when the rubber flap is removed. I cut most of the back off it where it reduces it's diameter and attached it using a 4" rubber hose coupler so it's closer to the grille. I then used the rubber flap and it's three plastic fasteners to block off the hot air from the engine by fastening it to the airbox on one end and to the fan shroud on the other. Seems to work pretty good, but I am still using the cheap paper filter. There are two drain holes at the bottom of the airbox so normal puddles wouldn't cause a problem. Then I drilled into the lid of the airbox and screwed in my IAT sensor after lengthening the wires a bit.

V8 to Fastman to F&B Flowmetricks

V8 12 to 15 HP at 3000rpm
