I have been into modifying my dakota for about 6 months now, but I have only recently heard of an underdrive pulley. I have a 2000 4x4 with the automatic. From what I have heard, this mod can make it hard to keep the battery charged because the alternator slows down, and the water pump is also negatively affected. Can this be stopped by just changing the crasnkshaft pulley, rather than every pulley? If I just do that will I still see a horsepower gain? If someone has put an underdrive pulley on their 3.9, could you say which pulleys you changed and how much performance it added? Thanks. Sorry for all the questions, just trying to investigate this a little more.

I have changed out just my crank pulley, but I still saw negative effects in both cooling and charging... As far as power gains goes, I really couldn't tell ya since I did this with every other mod I did to my motor while it was tore down... I can tell you that the under drive pulley was about 2" smaller in diameter...

To start with the charging is only effected if you let it idle with all of your lights on... I notice that while I've got both my headlights on bright and my fog lights on, if I'm stopped and it's idling the lights will dim up until I give it some gas then they brighten right back up... I'm sure a way to get rid of this would of course be to get a higher output alternator... But like where before it would idle and the needle would stay at the 14 point on the gauge, now it idles and it will drop down to about 12/13 volts...

As far as cooling I only noticed it to overheat once and that may just be because I no longer have a fan shroud, but still have the regular clutch fan... It only over heated on a fairly hot day while I was letting it idle in a parking lot for about 30 minutes, because I was figuring on my brother coming out of the store any minute, so I just left it running while I was waiting on him... Of course right as I finally cut it off he came out, go figure... But anyway I put in 2 bottles of the red line coolant additive and so far no more overheating... Even the time it "overheated" it only got up to a little below 210 degrees, but I have a 180 tstat :))

Now a lot of people have changed out all of the pulleys and never saw any ill or negative effects, so I guess it just depends on age, driving habit and miles on the truck... The best price and person to deal with about these are Sam over at socaldakota.com if you still want it...

i have just a crank pulley on my '00 3.9 QC w/ no ill effects. i still have the original battery too. even with all acc. on the volt meter still reads 14 @ idle. maybe it's because mines has a manual tranny. the engine revs a little quicker, other than that i couldn't really tell the diff. only costs me 20 bucks.

i have the underdrive pulley on my 01, havent noticed any ill
effects so far, ive had it on for about 3 months now... its nice,
alota low-end torque, my dak is lifted on 31's so its nice when
getting on the freeway.
mine cost me about 50
and only took about an hr to install.
also i have seen my gas millage go up.... as long as i dont stomp
on it... also, be careful not to stomp on the gas too soon once
you install it, You'll light em up!
