Kevin, I have an 87 as well, it's a 4x4 with an auto tranny.
From the owners manual from my truck:
"The towing of light trailers, 2,000 lbs. (907 kg) or less, on reasonably level roads and in moderate ambient temperature is allowable. No special equipment is required.

For towing trailers over 2,000 lbs., see your dealer for special equipment requirements.

I pull Cars around all the time with mine with very little trouble on a car dolly.
I have an heavy (homemade) receiver style hitch that I use. I wouldn't trust the stock bumber with a very big load.
I recently moved an 95 Ford Taurus (to give you a reference of the size of car) for a buddy of mine to a local shop to get it fixed (about a 15 mile trip).
Had no problems at all, it was a little slow in picking up speed, but once I got on the highway it did a decent job.
I would advise that you use reduced speed though, with a heavy car behind you, it tends to "roadwalk" a little bit if you go over 55.

Also, I wouldn't recommend pulling steep grades with it. The 3.9 does a pretty good job, but it ain't no magnum v-8 :)

Keep your transmission fluid and filter clean, and keep an eye on the temperature and you shouldn't have any troubles as long as you don't go to extremes.

Hope this helps.

Don't expect to see 20mpg with it, somewhere in the 15-18mpg range is normal, some get better mileage with some performance mods.

From my readings here, folks have pulled 20ft fiberglass boats with their v6 Dakotas.

Pulled a trailer full of cattle totaling 10,000 lbs

Just take it slow and let the truck have some cool down time before putting it away. I didnt over heat but i feel its a good practice with any equipment u work hard.

I have a few mods and traveled 60 miles on I90 with a lot of steep long hills. On the hills i floored it and would accelerate up to 45 mph.
The 3.9 is tough and has enough torque to do it, its actually more like the old work horse flat head 6s i used on the farm except pushing more rpms to be in there peak torque curve.

2002 4x4 3.9 dakota quad cab
Mods: 4.10 gears, 1.7 RR, underdrive pully, intake, 180 stat, msd box, cleaned up intake manifold, dremeled TB, exhaust.

Ive pulled 10,000 lbs trailers on several occassions 2 have been 60 mile trips. Just creep down the hills and take it easy so u dont break anything and make sure u have a hitch rated for the job with a good tranny cooler. Understand how to read your temp and oil pressure gauges. Those 2 gauges will tell u if your overworking a motor.

well, i guess i should have expected that the price for my 87 dakota was too good to believe. when i come to a stop light, i hear a grinding noise comming from the detrot locker area same noise when i take off from a stop. it only seems to happen after the truck has warmed up. definately a gear grinding noise. anyone else had this problem? and is it a super expensive problem?

I've pulled 14,000# with my 88 dak 3.9 2wheel drive. 727 torqueflight trans in it. 12 1000# round bales on a bale wagon that weighs a ton just sitting there. Now mind you that this was just rolling weight, with literally no tongue weight, but it's amazing what these "little trucks" can do.

i hear stories like these and read on one of the deisel forums i visit some guy pulled 7k trailer loaded with 52k of weight, with his 2500

you can do this stuff
the legal issues of it, and the saftey issues of it are a different matter

you could pull a loaded semi trailer if you wanted to, how safe it is, how good on your truck it is and how legal it is are different matters
