Well i'm at a loss as to what could be wrong with my truck, it's a 88 3.9l V6 dakota. It sounds like it's trying to start but it will not fire. I've had my friends who are mechanically inclined along with my dad try and help me fix it, but we dont' know whats wrong. We've replaced the distributor cap and the the distrib coil. My friend tells me that there is spark going to the spark plugs, but i'm not sure if he was right or not, going to check that tommorow when i get up. My dad tried pouring a lil bit of gas down the carb to see if it'll fire but it wouldn't fire so i'm at a loss. Can you guys help me out with more ideas to what could be wrong?

my 88 with a V6 was doing the same and after replacing the coil, distributor cap and plugs as i was at a loss also. but after a long inspection i finally relized that my new distributor cap was cracked slightly. Turns out there was a major problems with many of the distributors that were sold- so maybe thats ur problem

if you have fire to the plugs, check for fuel to the throttle body,if you have both of these then you may have jump timimg,

you need to near it down, check for these things,

if your dad dumped fuel down the tb and you have fire it should of fired

good luck

thats the thing, when he did pour some down it didn't fire. I'll check the distrib cap to see if it's cracked. It wasn't an the exact same but it fit on there good so i dunno if its that or something else. I couldn't get ahold of my friend and my dad was working so couldn't check on some other stuff i've been reading on there with people with similar problems. Kinda sux hardly knowing a damn thing about my truck.

If no spark ,replace the pickup coil in the distributor.
