Subject: Crower 1.7 rockers vs JBA headers
IP: Logged

Message:
I have a 92 4X4 Dakota with a 3.9L engine. Just installed a V8 TB and am happy with the new throttle response. Have a free flowing exhaust too. Also, a K&N filter and upgraded ignition system/parts, 180deg thermostat.

I want to keep the low range good as I off road quite often. This mod is to help highway, climbing hills and passing performance. Will run under 5500rpm.

Which would give a better performance gain in the mid range (2000 to 4500rpm) Crower 1.7 rockers or the JBA headers? Can only afford one for now.

Thanks for the input...

Jerry

Go with the Crower 1.7 roller rockers or the Harland Sharp 1.7 roller rockers, the 92 and 93 dakotas have larger manifolds that the years of Dakota 94 and newer, they say you can put the 92 manifold on the daks and pick up about 10 hp. If money is an issue go with the roller rockers and forget the headers.

Wadak is right.

Go with the rockers, the xhaust manifolds have great flow on 92/93 engines..

I'd also agree, go with the rockers. I have both 1.7 crower rockers and JBA headers and the rockers seemed to make more of a difference. I tow with my v-6 so I was after torque in the lower to mid rpms also. Great mod on the v-6.

Thanks to all that responded. I will look for a set of rockers then.

There seems to be three brands Crower, Huges, and now Harland Sharp. Except for the Crower, I have never seen these advertised or priced. Someone posted that Comp Cam also makes rockers but they were not listed on their website.

Any feedback would be appreciated on price and performance?

if you do not plan on doin a cam swap get the harland. they are much cheaper and u would have sum cash left over.. another thing u should look at is that krc has a mopar perf pcm for your year truck, you should look into that if u dont mind running 93. krc is slow on customer responce. i suggest getting the roller rockers from southeastrt.com he hooks up all dakota owners!

I run the Crower's on my 3.9, Super strong stainless steel. I went with them because they are a proven product with over a 10 year track record on the magnum 3.9 and 5.2

John at So Cal R/T has the harlands for around
$300 and they just bolt in no adjusting requiered
very easy to install and no valve cover baffel mod
needed

The rockers will give you around 18 hp 24 foot
pounds of torque at the rear wheels starting at
1800 rpm with no low end loss you will actually
gain because of your exhaust and bigger TB

The headers would be one of the last things you
would do, once the intake side is improved than
you will see gains form 5 to 15 hp from the
headers but as someone already told you the 92 93 model years had bigger better flowing exhaust
manifolds worth about 10 hp once the intake side
is improved over newer 94 and up manifolds

Also with a better flowing intake and exhaust than
try a Jet stage 2 chip and you will notice even
better low end and more power around 2500rpm on up.

We dynoed the Jet 2 on my truck with headers F&B
ported heads and port matched intake ram air and
MSD and running at 183 185 after a 200 mile learn
the chip showed 5 hp at 1800 8 hp at 2000 rpm and 12 at 2500 with a peak of 16 at 3200 to 4500rpm
besides the gas mileage gain and this was on 89
oct. fuel,

The superchips for 98 and up show almost the same
gains as the Jet 2 on a moded engine with improved
intake and exhaust

With out chip 21 22 mpg
with chip 23 24 mpg
a 1 to 3 mpg gain can be expected using the chip
they advance the timing from 2500 rpm up but do
alter the IAT and TPS signal right off idle for
better low end faster trans reaction time and also
trick the comp into checking the air fuel ratio
more to hold a better air/fuel ratio, as Jet says
a more effecieant running motor.

The Jet Stage 2 chip showed 24hp on the hemi truck
over without it, cold air, catback duel gibson and
the Jet shoed a 69hp gain on the hemi putting it at 414hp over stock 345hp they do work as said
but you do need the better flowing intake and
exhaust to see the gains
