Subject: 96 V6 Hard Starting

Before spending a ton on a fuel pump/filter unit, is there a general concensus on what causes these hard starts? I've burned out one starter already hoping the problem would just fix itself. It hasnt. What is the pressure supposed to be for a 96 V6. Anything over 30 ok? Any help is very appreciated. Tom

30 psi will run it but it will effect performance
and gas mileage by decreasing the atomization.

40 to 50 is normal and should hold it for a while.

You may want to check the relays in the power dist
box under the hood sometimes they go bad and you
have to try to start a few times before they work
Ign, ASD, Fuel all have relays in this box.

Another thing it could be is bad injectors leaking
gas into the cyls creating a flooding problem and
hard starts.

There is a shrader valve located on one of the
fuel rails to check presure and the pump will not
activate untill the motor is turning over.

Usualy a bad pump will cause stalling probs and
than start and run fine aftewr it cools down 15
min to a half hour

Thanks Larry. By what you are telling me i would assume my pump/filter is probably ok since this is only a problem on starting the motor. The engine runs smooth once started with the exeption of about 15 seconds after starting. During that time i feel the truck shake a little, as if it is missing, but then smooths out with plenty of power and no other noticable hesitation at all for as long or as little as i choose to drive it. I will check pressure and hope it is at 40 or better and holds and check the relays you mentioned. Are you telling me to look for loose relays or to simply replace them? Thanks again for your insight in this matter. Tom

If you have a leaking injector it will flood the system with gas. The O2 will think it is way rich and try to lean the system to it's maximum. The truck won't start under these conditions.

So as you crank the engine it slowly clears the system of excess fuel. The O2 will start to richen back up the system until, if you lucky, the engine starts. Then things will still be out of wack until the O2 readings come back to normal.

This, of course, is only one possible problem. Check for fuel pressure at the shrader valve like Larry suggested.

Ok. If i test the fuel pressure and the pressure is fine but it does not hold for a while then does that mean one or more of my injectors are leaking? Or is it possible that fuel can leak backwards into the pump, therefore making the pump bad?? Tom

yes on both.

The problem is you should get fuel pressure back up by just cycling the key on to off to on again waiting in the on position for a couple of seconds. A fuel pressure check, use a gauge or check the shrader valve, will let you know about the pump. If it is still hard starting after there is pressure in the system, then it could be a leaking injector. Pull all the plugs and see if there is a cylinder that has a very pronounced gas smell after it has set for a while.

The relays may be your problem ( Not loose )
but the contacts inside may be " burned " or 'dirty' ..
Have you tried turning over only about 1 turn
at a time to see when it would start ?
You might be able to simply switch the relays around and improve situation !
Although if that does ' work ' , you should
replace a couple of them to ensure..
