Does anyone have a problem with their clearcoat flaking off? I'm a little pissed about this as my truck only has 32,000 miles on it and there's a 3 sq. inch section of the clearcoat peeling off where the side mirror meets the door. I took it to the body shop and they say they have to re-coat the entire door to ensure that it doesn't keep spreading. This is going to cost $350. What worries me is that I found a few other tiny areas where it looks like the same thing is starting to happen, but fixing them all would mean re-coating almost the entire truck. Does it piss anyone else off that for designing such a nice looking truck, Chrysler couldn't figure out how to make their clearcoat stick to the paint?

Check with your dealer, you may be able to get them to pay for it.

It cost me $800 to have the entire side of my truck painted. That includes the front bumper to where the tailgate meets. You're getting ripped off...shop around. And the $800 quote was from a dealership.

I bought the truck privately a few months ago and of course I didn't notice it until I took it home. I think it's the original paint though. I know where the dealership is where it came from originally but I don't know if they would help me, the truck's 4 years old. You think $350 is too much for the whole door?

WhiteDakota2, the website you posted pretty much described exactly what's happening to my paint, but only for specific models and years, not including any dakotas or anything after 1998. If I did try this, do you think I could take it to any dealership? The dealership it's from is on the far side of Jersey, and I'm in NY.

Any dealer should cover under warranty the clearcoat problem as it is a company issue not a dealer issue.

Good Luck!

I don't think it's under warranty anymore. I bought it privately and I didn't get any papers that said anything about the warranty.

Thanks ok, see the dealer anyway.

It's a manufacturer defect and they should pay for it.

Well that would be great because I can point out all the other spots and get basically my whole truck recoated for no charge. It does sound too good to be true though.

Actually the should pay for all of it anyway.

The court cases point to the fact that if the owner takes care of the car, it should last like 10 years.

So if they don't pay for a full repaint they should at least pay for half (5 years is half of 10).

IMHO, before going to DC about it, i'd make sure it wasn't wrecked before. you could pull that door panel off and look inside the door for signs of repair. if it hasn't been wrecked or repainted before, then go after them with a vengeance.

Well assuming I can trust the guy I bought it from, the only problem he ever had was the wheel fell off. I know that ain't good, but he had all the documentation from the repairs. He actually seemed to have documentation from everything done to the truck. He definitely took good care of it. If he was that honest, he probably would have told me if the door was damaged. How can I prove to the dealer that this is original paint?

It's a Chrysler thing.

Can you get a carfax report? It should detail any damage done to the vehicle. Based on the damage you can determine if any required paint??

yeah, like he^ said carfax. or as i wrote, pull the door panel off of the suspect door and you would see if there is any evidence of body.

say the guy that sold you the truck is honest. the truck could have been dmamged and repaired by the dealer before he purchased it without his knowing.

example: a friend of mine bought a "new" chevy from a local dealer. brought it home. next day he's washing it and finds some runs in the paint on the lower passenger's door. he pulls the door panel off to find evidence of the door being repaired and repainted. go back to the dealer and confronts them. the dealers fix = got a truck same color off the lot and swapped the new door to my freinds truck!
sorry for the ramble but ya never know.

Well, as it turns out, the drivers side door and club cab panel have been repainted (and not well). You can see the tape lines. The good news- my neighbor backed out into my truck the other day and smashed both of those panels. Now I get to take it to a good body shop and I don't have to pay a cent. Thanks old lady!
