Subject: Horrible Gas Milage & new air intake

My 95 CC V6 4x4 has gotten 12-13 mph the last 2 times i filled up the tank. It should be getting around 16-18 in town. It has a new fuel filter, new tires (same size as old ones), new pcv valve. I have checked the air filter, it looks good (about 7k miles on it). On my to-dos are oil change (it's almost due) and it's almost time for me to install new plugs and wires. Newer cat, installed about 15k miles ago. Without digging into my paperwork, i think it's been a long time since i installed the muffler. It passed the emission test with flying colors about 2 months ago. Anything else I should check or am missing?

Also, I want to upgrade the air intake. It's stock now, I see the inlet is in the grill. There's a plastic cover that restricts the air flow (without pulling the intake out or pulling the grill off, it looks like the air has to enter over and under this plastic cover). What's a good way to modify this to allow more air to enter besides installing a new kit? I'm thinking of getting a K&N filter or equivalent (fram air hog, accel, etc). Anyone recommend any one over the ther? Seems most here use K&N.

thanks in advance

How many miles on your truck? Your oxygen sensor may need replaced, loss of mileage and power are two of the symptoms. Your O2 sensor should be replaced at 60,000 miles.

I was getting 12 mpg with no mods, and a lack of maintenance. After a muffler, Air intake, and wheel alignment, i got 16 mpg+. The wheel alignment really really helps.

Also, I took off the rubber shield behind the grill. It's in front of the air intake, so now more air can get to it while its movin.

The truck has 142k miles on it. I didn't think about the 02 sensors. I had a wheel alignment done when i got the new tires installed last month.
