Got a GREAT deal on a leftover QuadCab at the end of Sept. Three(3) days later, (yep that's on Friday just before the Holiday weeknd and I have all my gear packed into my new truck), the MIS(check engine) light comes on! I couldn't believe it! Long story short, they need to download a 'flash' in the computer and it wasn't available until today.

Anyone else have this problem? Do I have a right to bitch at someone when I pick it up or do these things 'just happen'?

Scott

I suggest that you ask for the problem code that the check engine gave them. Keep a good record. This can give you a better idea of what is going on. Besides, I tend not to trust dealers.

My Dakota is a 2003 3.9L. The onle check engine lite that I had when it was new was the code number P0442 which the code interpretation is Evap Leak Monitor Medium Leak Detected, that means and mostlikly I left the gas tank cap lose or not tighten sufficient.

I hope I helped or made you feel better.

I got my 2004 Quadcab with the 3.7L on Aug. 23. At mile 199 my Check Engine Light came on. Code was P 2099(which is some kind of rich fuel code). I took it to the dealer and they cleared it, and told me that it was probably caused by being repeatedly started on the lot. 5 days later at mile 710, the light came on again, and had the same P 2099 code as well as P 2097. I was at of town when it came on the second time and before i could make it to my appointment with the dealer, at mile 1020 the light went off. I am now at around mile 2100 or so, and haven't seen the light since.

I also got an amazing deal on a 04 quadcab sport plus 4x4 3.7 at the end of july (sticker price 30,900, final price 21,000) and had my check engine light come on twice within a week of having it. Both times, the O2 sensors were replced (i was told there were two on the right side, one was replaced, then the other). I was told later on by my cuz, who got a sport stampede, that you have to stop pumping gas when the pump stops itself, as well as making sure the cap clicks at least 3 times, other wise the light comes on... touchy pressure sensor im guessing...

Well I had the "Malfunction Indicator" light come on in my truck which I'm guessing is the same as all of you since the dealership told me it could come on if my gas cap wasn't tight enough. It turned on 3 times, the first was the day after I bought the truck! I took it to the dealership and they said my computer was malfunctioning cause it just kept on listing tons of codes to all sorts of problems. They reporgrammed it, and I haven't had a problem for about 3 months now.

Maybe it's just me, but the interior of the newer Dakotas dont seem as well built as the others. I got in a 2004 and it just seemed a little cheap. It appeared plastic, and that i could rip stuff off. Who knows, maybe its actually better built, it just looks a little worse on the outside. My friend and I were just dissapointed at the outward look. The exterior of the 2004 is still hot tho, of course.

I had the same problem with the evap leak code with my 2000 3.9L, even though I always tighten my cap good. My shop gave me a new gas cap and the light went away for a few days, then started coming back on every now and then. Lately, it stopped coming on, but every time I start up the truck the bell only chimes once, I think that might be related. I was told that there might be a pinhole vapor leak in my gas tank that's too small to find so they'll probably have to drop the tank and recoat the whole thing.

I bought a new 2004 V8 SLT about a month ago. I noticed that when I am idling while stopped at a traffic light I get a slight, intermittent skip. I don't really see any change on the tach needle, though. Anybody else experience this? Seems to run fine otherwise and has never stalled.

I have an 2004 Quadcab with the 3.7 and I've had it back to the dealer 4 times in the 4 months that I have had the truck. The first time was the day after I bought it and none of the lighting was working, The second my check engine light came on and needed to be reset, the third a computer module needed to be replaced, and finally on monday I had to get the rear brakes done because one was warped and making a howling sound in reverse. I guess what I want to know is should I expect more problems with my dakota or didI just get a lemon?

i got my 04 qc 4wd back in january. within a week, the engine light came on and they had to replace a sensor. i haven't had any problems since then and i've got 19k miles on it now.(watch now as i pound on wood)

overall, i'm very happy with my dak. i do intend on at least getting an intake and exhaust as well as a tonneau cover and nerf bars. other then that i probably won't do much

I talked to my Auto teacher, and he said the best way to solve the "engine stutter" problem is to get an aftermarket computer re-programmer. They do void the warranty from what he was saying, but the programmers can save the old information, so you can re-program with the old info. He also said the "engine stutter" is actualy a tracn problem. Aomething about how the computer is programmed to shift. No one has one available yet, but i did find one place supposibly working on one. I also found the 90% of parts that fit the extended/quad cab trucks with V8's fit the extended/quad V6's (i.e. exaust, air intakes, throttle bodys)
