Subject: Removing the fan to get @ the water pump
IP: Logged

Hi,
I've got 98 Dakota (V6 3.9L) that has a bad water pump. I'm trying to change it myself, but I can't get the fan off to get to it. The water pump pully rotates when I crank on the nut and I can't hold it with anything. I bought a tool that was supposed to clamp onto the pully nuts and hold it in place, but the pully hasn't got any nuts that I can see (at least not on the face of it).

Has anyone ever removed their fan and if so, how did you do it? I know I'm missing something. Thanks!!!

grab the pulley from the side with a pair of vise grips to hold it from turning. put some wd or whatever on the nut and let it soak for a little while. then put your wrench on that big nut and whack it good with a hammer. should come right off.

I second that, daddio. I took mine off last weekend and used a vise grip and a big screwdriver to hold the fan still while I pounded. Once it started, it came off real easy. The biggest problem was trying to figure out which direction to spin it. In the book it says counter-clockwise, but is that from the bumper looking in, or from the engine looking out? It spins counter-clockwise from the bumper looking in.
I replaced my fan with an electric one and am so glad I did - huge difference in noise and spool up of the engine.

I removed mine with a 1 7/16 wrench on the nut and a whack from a hammer. Came off after one hit. I think 1 7/16 is equivalent to 36mm. Got the wrench from Ace hardware for $19.

I used Larry's method. With the belt and tenisoner on I took a long punch and a shop hammer and hit the nut on the passengerside a few times and then the nut unscrewed, counter clockwise as viewed from the front, using just and adjustable wrench.

Doesn't your pulley have a few holes in it? Just stick some small bolts or metal rods in two of the holes and use a screwdriver between them to hold the pulley still while you wrench on the big nut for the fan.

May be a different setup but in my '96 3.9, I left the fan on, unbolted the pump and pulled everything out along with the fan cowling. After it was out, put the pump impellers into the vise and the unbolted the fan. Kind of a clumsy way to do it but I was running out of time and ideas.

My 96 had the stock pump when I got the truck and when the pump went out like right after 60k it had bolt's on the front of the pulley.I did the screw driver method,But my after market pump just has holes so I put 2 dowel pins in it so I could get leverage with my screw driver..to get it tight..

Hey, thanks guys. I took your combined advice and got the fan off and replaced the pump over the long Labor Day Weekend. I placed bolts in the holes where bolt head would have been had it not been a press on pully, then used the pully wrench I had to hold it in place while I gave my wrench a couple of good wacks with the ol' hammer. Came right off. After that, piece of cake.

I did modify my shroud, though. I cut the base of it so it can be removed without taking the whole fan off as well. It's a pain in the arse to work around.

Thanks again all!!!

yeah most of what everyone else said is true. I have
5.9 V8 and it the same deal. once u get fan shroud
outta the way. put big pair of vice grips on 10 O
clock side of pulley looking at engine from front of
truck. take 36mm wrench slide on big nut and sharply
push counter clockwise, same direction as fan usually
turns when running. all directions are looking at
engine from front of vehicle.should come free.if
rusted put some kind rust penetrant 15mins prior to
trying.
