I'm stuck! I've got a '92 Dakota that will not start, but only intermittently. Sometimes it starts right up, but other times it simply will not run. Here's what I've been able to determine:

When it wont start, the fuel pump will not kick in. Checked the relay, and it is fine. Even swapped it out, but no go.

I'm starting to think crankshaft position sensor, and here is why. In the book there is mention that the computer waits for tach signals to start the engine. Those signals are generated by the CPS.

When I have someone crank the engine, and spray in starter fluid, the engine fires on the fluid which is then enough to make it run. Everytime it won't start the fluid trick works great. My only guess is the crankshaft position sensor may be going bad, and by getting it to half-run on the fluid is enough for the sensor to pick up a signal.

Has anyone experienced this problem? Think it's the sensor?

No - it is NOT that sensor - you would not get spark if the CPS was not ' working '...
Possible problem - ASD relay in underhood fusebox
or the connections to it !
Also check the wires in the harness from there back to firewall-=- find a splice of 3 or 4 wires
redo that ' splice ' -=- use either a good quality
joiner or solder and tape.
Fuel pump must be on to get fuel to engine..

Ok, I'll do some more checking before I buy anything. The truck hasn't been worked on in a while, so I've gotta check again to see if it has spark when it wont start. If the CPS was failing, would it result in no spark and also no signals to start the fuel pump?

But then again it does begin to start off the starting fluid, but could it be possible it's simply dieseling off the ether?

Well, I was going to just swap that part out, but I guess my best bet is to get back in there, check spark, relay contacts, and hit the wireloom with a multimeter...was hoping to find someone with exactly the same problem but sounds like this is one that will take more poking and prodding to find the root cause. The annoying part is that it's only intermittent...once it finally starts it might start right up the next 20 times and could take a day or two to stop working again.

Thanks for the reply though, I'll dig around some and report back.

PS. Is there anyway to check the CPS unit? The reason I ask is I found one online on Autozone's site and it was a Wells unit that had a comment referencing procedures to check the CPS that can be found in some sort of Wells manual. But it was very vague.
